The Redondo Beach Yacht Club celebrated its 50th Anniversary during Opening Day Ceremonies on Saturday April 10, a day made for sailing with clear skies, 70 degree air and 15 to 20 knot winds.
Outgoing commodore Kathi Sheridan was presented the traditional blue gavel and 2011 commodore Craig Miller was sworn in.
Miller recalled the club’s founding in 1961 as a sabot club called the Palos Verdes Yacht Club. Members launched their boats off the rocky beach at Malaga Cove and then moved to King Harbor in the early 1960s. In 1981 the club changed its name to the Redondo Beach Yacht Club and in 1990 opened its permanent club house in King Harbor.
Miller noted that Redondo Beach is a racing club and hosted over 40 year races last year. Its former three-time commodore John Ellinwood was named Racing Commodore of the Decade, and its founding commodore Gale Hine was a pioneer in women’s racing. ER
