A Hermosa Beach police officer spotted the driver about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, June 16 in the area of Pacific Coast Highway and First Street, and followed, suspecting DUI.
The officer saw the driver commit a traffic violation and was in the process of pulling the driver over when he began yelling at people inside an uninvolved vehicle and then intentionally rammed the vehicle, police said.
Outdoor smoking
Councilmen Howard Fishman and Jeff Duclos will hold a public hearing from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 23 at City Hall to investigate the impacts of smoking in outdoor public spaces.
The hearing will provide information and perspective on public health issues associated with outdoor smoking as the City Council considers potential regulation of smoking in various outdoor public places.
The hearing will feature expert public health witnesses, community and business leaders, and an opportunity for the public to be heard.
The Beach Cities Health District and National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, South Bay will provide expert testimony about the impacts of outdoor smoking on public health.
The hearing will focus on business, healthcare and community stakeholders who are affected by outdoor smoking or will be impacted by its potential regulation.
Among those scheduled to provide testimony are Dr. May Eno, addiction specialist at Kaiser Permanente South Bay and a Hermosa Beach resident, and Dr. Virender Rehan, expert on second and third hand smoke and a researcher for Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
Cities throughout Los Angeles, including Beverly Hills, have adopted measures that limit or ban smoking in outdoor public spaces.
Fishman and Duclos, who serve on an ad-hoc committee studying outdoor smoking, are expected to report their findings to the full City Council later this year.
