
Bay League champion Mira Costa (18-9) was awarded the second seed in the Division 3 CIF Southern Section/Ford Boys Water Polo Championships and defeated visiting Corona 17-4 in the first round Wednesday.
Jimmy Bissell, Austin Norris and Sam Siltanen each scored three goals and Gabe Smith added two while goalkeeper Ian Zaun recorded seven saves for the Mustangs.
Mira Costa will host No. 7 Tesoro (22-8) in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Bay League runner-up Palos Verdes (24-5) earned the No. 4 seed and throttled Bell Gardens 21-11 in the opening round. The Panthers will host No. 5 Mission Viejo (21-9) on Saturday.
Tenth-seeded Peninsula (15-13) had its season end losing a 7-6 heartbreaker at No. 8 Santiago/Corona (16-9).
Redondo (14-12) earned at at-large bid and beat host Trabuco Hills 9-7 in a wild-card game Tuesday. Lucas Duffy and Jonathan Ortiz each scored four goals and goalkeeper Xcevio Zuluaga recorded 13 saves for the Sea Hawks.
Playing in the post season for the first time since 2008, Redondo’s run was short lived as the Sea Hawks lost at No. 3 M.L. King 13-4 on Wednesday.
In Division 4, No. 8 El Segundo (14-14) lost a nail-biter to No. 9 La Habra 15-14 in a first round game Thursday at Mira Costa High School.
In Division 5, Chadwick (11-15) entered the playoffs ranked tenth but lost at No. 2 La Serna 12-7 in the first round.
Semifinal games will be held Wednesday, Nov. 14 at William Woollett Jr. Aquatic Center in Irvine. Championship games will be held at the same venue on Saturday, Nov. 17.
Girls Golf
Mira Costa finished second in the CIF Southern Section Central Division Team Championships at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills. The Mustangs scored 403, trailing Bay League rival and CIF champion Palos Verdes (393). Andrea Lee led Mira Costa shooting a 73 while teammate Megan Kim shot a 76.
In the CIF State Qualifier, Mira Costa placed sixth (387) behind fifth-place Palos Verdes (382) who miss the cut by one stroke. Mira Costa was led by Lee who finished tied for second individually with a 68. Kim shot a 76, Kari Gordon shot a 78, Marnina Murez had a 79 and Raquel Gordon and Mikaela Pascual shot and 86.
In the CIF Northern Individual Regional Golf Tournament, Redondo’s Robynn Ree shot a 66 for a second-place finish. Kim and Lee each shot a 72. Golfers with scores of 78 or better advanced to the CIF Southern Section Championships at Western Hills Golf & Country Club in Chino Hills where eight South Bay girls advanced.
Torrance’s Anne Cheng finished third with a 72. South’s Michelle Yom (73) North’s Cindy Oh (74) and Alice Jeong (76), Redondo’s Ree (77), Mira Costa’s Kim (80) and Palos Verdes’ Elizabeth Doty (80) also advanced to the CIF/WSCGA Regional State Qualifier on Thursday at The Golf Club at Rancho California in Murrieta.
Mira Costa’s Lee opted to compete in an amateur national tournament in Florida and was replaced with North’s Kacy Kaichi who shot a 92. West’ Erin Choi (81) is the 2nd alternate.
Jeong shot a 2-under-par 70 becoming the only South Bay golfer to advance to the state finals. Cheng (73), Doty (76), Ree (75), Yom (78), Kim (79) and Oh (79) did not qualify for the State Championships which will be held Thursday at Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga.
Girls Tennis
Mira Costa (16-3) saw its season end with a 13-5 loss to visiting Thousand Oaks in the second round of the CIF Southern Section/Ford Division 1 Championships. The doubles teams of Carly McGuire-Hanna McGuire and Sidney Ascher-Sulibeth Ortiz-Torres won two sets apiece.
Mira Costa convincingly won its first-round match with a 17-1 victory at Palm Springs. Brooke Swallow swept three singles sets and the doubles team of McGuire-McGuire swept three sets. Paula Cenusa and Mai Nojima won two sets. The team of Juliana Hoft-Alex Waller won two sets.
Redondo earned an at-large bid and defeated Simi Valley 11-7 in a wild-card match. The Sea Hawks (14-7) played at Campbell Hall but fell to the top seeded team 15-3.
Bay League champion Peninsula (22-3) beat Calabasas 15-3 and Corona del Mar 12-6 in the first two rounds. The Panthers advanced and defeated host Tesoro 15-3 before losing at top seeded Campbell Hall 13-5 in the semifinals Wednesday.
In Division 4, El Segundo (15-8) won its wild-card match with Hesperia 18-0, beating Santa Fe 15-3 in the first round and Thacher 10-8 in the second round. The Eagles hosted top-seeded Cerritos (23-1) Monday but lost 14-4 in the quarterfinal contest.
Seventh-seeded South Torrance (12-5) reached the Division 4 semifinals after defeating El Monte 15-3, Windward 13-5 and No. 2 Orcutt Academy 10-8 before losing a hearterbreaker at No. 3 Redlands Wednesday. Tied in sets 9-9, Redlands won on total games 81-74.
