Redondo Beach native Shauna Jean Malone passed away suddenly last Wednesday in San Francisco after coming down with pneumonia. She was 43. Malone twice traveled the world — the first time with her family when she was nine, the second time, after college, as a singer and dancer with Up With People.
Malone attended Chadwick and Palos Verdes High School, where she was a Ticktocker and was active in drama and music. She received a bachelor’s degree from Tufts in 1992. She then earned a masters degree in social work at the University of Maryland, while helping women prisoners with the Lutheran Volunteer Corp. and working at the Kennedy Krieger Family Center.
In 2000, Malone moved to San Francisco to work as a family therapist at Eden Children Services in Alameda County, where she was active at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. In 2007, Malone married Andreas Kemp, a physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Labs. The couple had their first daughter Mara Clare in 2008 and their second daughter Carly Ann Lillie in 20010.
In addition to her husband and daughters, Malone is survived by her sister Molly Malone of San Francisco and parents Tom and Mary Malone of Palos Verdes Estates. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to one of the following charities: Bread for the World, Lutheran Volunteer Corp., Delancy Street, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and Richstone Center.
