Mira Costa girls earn fifth seed in CIF Division 2 soccer playoffs [UPDATED]

Mira Costa won a share of the Bay League crown when Hanna Watkins score in the 78th minute to give the Mustangs a 3-2 win over host Palos Verdes.

Taylor Foland’s goal gave Mira Costa an early 1-0 lead and Megan Carver tied the score at two with a goal in the 74th minute.

Coach Patty Perkinson’s squad earned the fifth seed in the CIF Southern Section/Ford Division 2 Girls Soccer Championships presented by Farmers and defeated visiting Dos Pueblos 2-0 in the first round Thursday.

Kirby Benson and Mandy McKeegan scored goals and Christy Carey recorded six saves for the Mustangs (16-2-4) who will host Temecula Valley (16-4-5) in the second round Tuesday.

Redondo shutout Leuzinger 8-0 to conclude the Bay League season with Sierra Kaufman scoring two goals and Shannon Simon adding two goals for the Sea Hawks who finished in third place.

Coach Shelly Marsden led her team into Simi Valley where Redondo beat No. 10 Royal 2-0 in the first round Thursday.

Brittany Oldham and Simon scored goals and Marissa Marshall made 11 saves for the Sea Hawks (13-4-4) who will host Southwestern League champion and eighth-seeded Great Oak (16-2-3) in the second round Tuesday.

Bay League co-champion Peninsula (11-6-6) was upset by visiting Canyon of Canyon Country 1-0 in the first round.

Also representing the Bay League is West Torrance (14-8-4) which earned an at-large berth and defeated Murrieta Valley 3-1 on penalty kicks after playing to a scoreless tie in a wild-card game Tuesday. The Warrior’s run ended with a 3-0 loss at top-seeded Sunny Hills on Thursday

In Division 4, Pioneer League champion South Torrance (24-0-6) is the top seeded team and shutout Chino 4-0 Thursday. The Spartans play at Warren (13-7-2) Tuesday.

Torrance (18-3-2) is ranked seventh in Division 4 and had little trouble beating visiting Sultana 5-0 in the opening round. the Tartars take on No. 8 Lancaster (18-4-2) in the second round.

Losing wild-card games on Tuesday were El Segundo (10-9-3), which fell to host Beverly Hills 1-0 and Lawndale (12-11) which lost at Mayfair 7-1.

In Division 7, Vistamar (8-4-6) eliminated Buckley 3-0 in the first round Thursday and will play at No. 5 Crossroads (13-4-1) in the second round.
