Hermosa Beach pier to close for 40 days

The Hermosa Beach Pier will be closed for repairs for 40 days, beginning on April 8. During that time the city will make repairs on the 1,228-foot, 99-year-old pier and plans to reopen the refurbished pier in time for Memorial Day crowds, a city release said.

“The Hermosa Beach Municipal Pier is one of the city’s most valued assets, and we want to ensure it is maintained so we can all enjoy it for many years to come,” said Mayor Kit Bobko. “This brief closure is necessary to make the needed repairs, and the contract requires the pier be opened before Memorial Day.”

The city plans to replace a damaged concrete deck panel and repair six deteriorating concrete piles. Crews will install new fiberglass or steel jackets and inject underwater grout. The California Coastal Commission issued a permit for the work in February that requires all repairs to be completed before Memorial Day weekend to ensure that the public has access to the pier. The Regional Water Quality Control Board will be monitoring the water quality closely while repairs are being done.

According to the city, the design, permitting, construction, management and water quality monitoring will cost $190,018 that will be paid by the City’s Maintenance and Servicing Fund, which is controlled by the Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District. ER
