
Coached by Brian Mark and Trevor Oystrick, the Mira Costa varsity and junior varsity hockey teams concluded their successful season with impressive win in their respective championship games.
The varsity squad defeated Loyola 4-2 behind a two-goal performance by Kory Medeiros. Austin Bowkus and Doc Gentaler each scored one goal in the win.
Mira Costa’s varsity team finished with a 9-2-1 record outscoring its opponents 63-36 during the season
The varsity league included Mira Costa, Palos Verdes, Loyola, El Segundo, South Torrance, and teams from West Los Angeles and the Toyota Sports Center
The Mustang’s junior varsity team routed rival Palos Verdes 9-1. Led by Oliver Gable’s hat trick, Mira Costa also benefitted from two-goal games by Kai Borich and Quin McCauley. Scoring solo goals in the championship game were Robert Davis and Carlos Sanchez.
The JV squad went 10-2 this season dominating its victories. The Mustangs scored 107 goals while giving up only 26 during the 2013 campaign against Palos Verdes, La Canada, El Segundo, and South Torrance.
“I think that the success of the hockey program at Mira Costa has coincided with the Los Angeles Kings’ success,” Oystrick said. “We had a drastic increase in the number of players interested in trying out for the teams this year. Brian Mark and I have been trying to implement a program that combines player development, focus, and a disciplined game
Oystrick said there a move to have Mira Costa enter a CIF sanctioned league which is the Anaheim Ducks League.
