Neptunians donate handmade pillowcases

The Neptunian Woman’s Club of Manhattan Beach has donated 350 handmade pillowcases to the Children’s Welcome Center in Los Angeles, a county-run facility where young children removed from their homes temporarily stay before entering foster care.
“We have many needs and we are rarely the recipient of gifts from organizations,” said Sonja Vasques, a social worker at the facility.
The Neptunians began the project several months ago under the direction of interest group chairs Donna Scholtz and Mary Essman. After delivering the pillowcases, the two said they were touched by the children’s needs and hope to follow up with another project come Christmas.
About 250 children, some newborns just a few days old, pass through the Children’s Welcome Center monthly. A majority stay at the facility for just 24 hours before they are placed into a foster home.
Mayor’s Walk ‘N’ Talk
Continuing a tradition started by his predecessors, Mayor David Lesser will meet, walk and talk with residents on the first Monday of every month. Residents are invited to meet in front of Peet’s Coffee & Tea at 328 Manhattan Beach Blvd. at 8 a.m. for an hour-long walk along The Strand and engage in discussions of city issues with the mayor and other local residents.
