A candle made contact with a curtain around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday at 1046 4th Street. Hermosa Beach police and fire departments were at the scene within minutes and quickly had the blaze under control.
“The wind blew the curtains onto the candle causing them to catch on fire,” HBFD Chief David Lantzer said. “You have to be really careful with candles and never leave them unattended.”
Lantzer said that the fire was confined to the curtains, but the building was still evacuated.
“There was some damage to the ceiling and the wall,” said Lantzer “We had to open up the ceiling to make sure the fire hadn’t gone into the attic.”
He added that one civilian was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene and the building was structurally intact.
“The guys were there quickly and did a good job,” said Lantzer.
