Mira Costa’s girls soccer team captured its second tournament championship game with an impressive 3-1 victory over Sunny Hills in the North Orange County Tournament at La Mirada High School.
Kimby Keever scored two goals and had one assist to lead Mira Costa (14-1-1) in its win over Sunny Hills in the varsity championship game. Sunny Hills entered the tournament as the top-ranked team in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 poll while Mira Costa was ranked No. 10 in the same division.
Mandy McKeegan added one goal and one assist in the win.
Keever was named the tournament MVP after scoring nine goals in the three-day tournament. She also earned MVP honors after leading the Mustangs to the championship of the South Holiday Classic prior to the winter break.
“It was a great tournament,” Mira Costa head coach Patty Perkinson said. “The completion was incredible. I believe I have not coached a team winning two tournaments in a row over the Christmas break. Beating the number one ranked team in CIF gives our girls great confidence going into a tough Bay League! Winning the Orange County Tournament gives the girls the confidence that they can compete with the big teams in CIF and beating the number one ranked team in CIF gives our girls great confidence going into a tough Bay League.”
Mira Costa won the EFGH Pool championship game with a 3-1 win over Pasadena Poly, the top ranked team in Division 3.
Keever, McKeegan and Vivianna Villacorta each scored goals against and goalkeeper Nonie Frishette recorded five saves in Mira Costa’s 3-1 victory over La Mirada (No. 1, Div. 4) in the semifinals.
The Mustangs won their pool-play games with a 3-0 victory over Brea and a 2-1 win against La Serna.
Redondo Union prepared for the upcoming Bay League race by competing in the 32-team Excalibur Tournament hosted by Foothill High School. The Sea Hawks lost to Mater Dei 2-1 and Canyon 1-0 before shutting out Santa Ynez 2-0.
