Bay League champion Mira Costa reached the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 boys volleyball playoffs with an impressive win over visiting Dos Pueblos Tuesday evening.
Mira Costa (22-4) eliminated Dos Pueblos 25-15, 23-25, 25-17, 25-18 behind senior outside hitter Blake Markland’s 21-kill performance. Junior opposite Jackson Wedbush had 14 kills, senior middle blocker Carter Kimble added eight kills and junior setter Jonathan Kielbasinski recorded 40 assists.

“Not a bad first match, but we need to turn up our level of intensity for Thursday,” Mira Costa head coach Sean Shoptaw said. “Dos Pueblos is a solid team. They have a few good players who could have made life difficult for us if we let them.”
Mira Costa was awarded a second-straight home match and will host Trinity League champion Servite (19-11) Thursday at 7 p.m. Servite was pushed to the limit defeating Laguna Beach 21-15, 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 15-12 in the first round.
Bay League runner-up Palos Verdes (22-11) swept Thousand Oaks 25-11, 25-18, 25-17 and will play at second-seeded Loyola (27-1) on Thursday.
Redondo (20-13) saw its season end with a 19-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-17 loss at No. 8 San Clemente. Logan Glave led the Sea Hawks with 10 kills and Dominic Cangialosi added nine kills.
In Division 2, Torrance was the only Pioneer League team to escape the first round. Torrance (23-7) defeated Hillcrest 25-20, 25-12, 22-25, 25-16 and will host second-seeded Valencia/Valencia (30-6) in the second round.
Pioneer runner-up South Torrance (13-12) gave No. 8 Crescenta Valley all it could handle in a 28-30, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21, 15-13 loss.
West Torrance (17-16) was swept at third-seeded Burroughs/Burbank 25-21, 25-20, 25-20.
Top-seeded El Segundo (18-5) breezed through its Division 3 first-round match defeating Mission College Prep 25-9, 25-9, 25-12 and will play at Paramount (16-7) on Thursday.
Bishop Montgomery (19-13) went the distance to defeat visiting Highland 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-11. The seventh-ranked Knights will host No. 10 San Gabriel (24-8) in the second round.
In Division 4, Chadwick (13-6) swept Oxnard 30-28, 25-23, 25-23 and will host top-seeded Saddleback Valley Christian (24-4) on Thursday.
Vistamar (18-4) advanced to the second round of the Division 5 playoffs with a 25-8, 25-10, 25-6 rout of visiting Waverly. Seventh-ranked Vistamar will travel to take on No. 10 El Rancho (12-9) in the second round.
