Bike workshop

A three-hour workshop on bicycle safety, rules of the road, and equipment maintenance targeted to kids 8 to 16 will be held Saturday, May 22 in the amphitheater at the south end of Hermosa Valley Park, located at Valley Drive and Gould Avenue, followed by an equipment maintenance demonstration on the lawn near the picnic tables.

Last year’s launch of the workshop drew about 40 kids and parents.

Attendees should bring a bike and wear comfortable clothes, and a parent must accompany younger children. Participants seeking assistance with more involved maintenance, such as replacing pedals and mounting headlights, are urged to bring those accessories and related tools; representatives from Hermosa’s bike shops will be available for advice on services and replacement parts.

Safety instruction will include an update on Hermosa’s Bike Master Plan and protocol, and state law for pedestrians, vehicles, and cyclists.

Workshop agenda:

9:30-10:30 a.m. – safety and etiquette

10:30-11 a.m. – cycling in Hermosa and nearby

11-11:10 a.m. – stretch break and demo prep

11:10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. – equipment demo and safety inspections

12:30-1 p.m. – Q&A
