Kids to Captain Kidds

Special needs students from Washington School are doing a day trip to the Redondo Pier on June 5. They will be touring Captain Kidds, fishing, and enjoying a meal from Polly’s on the Pier. The Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce invites volunteers to help out with hosting the students. Call (310) 374-3481 for more information.

SEED Awards

The South Bay Business Environmental Coalition is accepting applications from individuals, groups, and businesses that have exhibited excellence in helping to improve environmental sustainability and quality of life in the South Bay. Nominations for the 2013 SoCal Environmental Excellence Development (SEED) Award will be accepted through June 10. Visit redondo.org for more information and for the application.

Free compost

A free compost giveaway event for Redondo Beach residents only will be held at Wilderness Park on Saturday, June 1 from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Each vehicle can collect a maximum of 30 gallons. Bring your own sturdy containers – no plastic bags.

Student of the Year

The Redondo Beach Coordinating Council will honor 15 outstanding students at its 25th annual Student of the Year luncheon on Tuesday, June 4, at 11:30 a.m. Chosen by teachers and principals in the Redondo Beach Unified School District, the winning high school students are Brett Kassel, Emily Su, Brittany Domingo and Kenya Spencer. Middle school honorees are Brandi Coleman, and Giorgia Fujita. Elementary school honors go to Brianna Baker, Vanessa Rebentisch, Kayla Rebentisch, Marissa Schiller, Hannah Hiken, Samantha Suncin, Keshar Narashimhan, Jake Willoughby, and Savannah Kirkland. Jewish Film Festival comes to Redondo

On Monday, June 3, at 7:30 p.m., the Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival is coming to Redondo Beach. Temple Menorah will be screening French film “Disobedience: The Sousa Mendes Story,” which tells the story of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the Portuguese Consul in Bordeaux who defied the orders of his government and grant visas out of Occupied France to an estimated 30,000 refugees, including 10,000 Jews. Fighting fatigue

The Cancer Support Community-Redondo Beach will host Marisa Hernandez, occupational therapy student, on Saturday, June 1 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at 109 W. Torrance Blvd. in Redondo Beach. Participants will learn techniques to manage fatigue through the lens of occupational therapy.

P.S. From Aeropostale – a clothing store for kids aged 4 to 12 – has landed in Redondo Beach at the South Bay Galleria, and celebrated its grand opening this week.
