E-bike general response; Memorial Day tickets

Redondo Beach Police wrote 46 e-bike citations over Memorial Day weekend, Friday to Tuesday, off of 76 enforcement stops.

“E-bikes continue to be a concern throughout the South Bay,” said Joe Hoffman, Redondo Beach police chief.

The chief went on to say that the RBPD will continue to conduct as much education, outreach and enforcement as possible.

“We cannot simply expect to write enough tickets to gain compliance. Enforcement is a critical component, but is not a magic solution.” Hoffman said.

Only certain types of e-bikes are subject to impounding – the motorcycle types.

“The average e-bike wouldn’t be subject to impound,” the chief said. “As we enter the summer months, I would like to ask that everyone make a conscious effort to operate their e-bikes in a responsible manner to enjoy the beaches and harbors in all the beach cities.”

63 budget decision packages in front of city council

Budget season is in effect at city hall, with city councilmembers taking in the first of three input sessions Tuesday night, June 4, for fiscal year 2024-25.

City Manager Mike Witzansky presented a proposed budget, balanced, recommending 63 decision packages to the council, for $83,000 leftover, providing certain fee increases.

The proposed budget includes $17 million in new capital appropriations.

Tuesday’s public hearing included Police Chief Joe Hoffman laying out the requested police department budget items, and new Public Works director Andy Winje doing the same for his department. Then Elizabeth Hause, interim community services director, for hers.

On the subject of fee increases, Hause told the council that staff had reviewed 15 comparable cities.

“It became pretty evident that a lot of our programs and facility uses were far below market standard in terms of what we were charging,” she said.

The term “decision package” refers to a supplemental request by a city department – for expenditures beyond base operating expenses. The city council decides whether to include each one in the final budget, either fully or partially funded.

The council must pass a new budget by July 1.

Muratsuchi names Housing navigator Omurra District 66 Woman of the Year

Lila Omurra, City of Redondo Beach housing navigator, has been named the “Woman of the Year” by State Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi for District 66. She was honored at city council Tuesday night, for her work directly on the streets of the city, finding and placing people in housing, through the Redondo Beach Enhanced Response to Homelessness program.

Muratsuchi did a ride-along with Omurra earlier this year before choosing her for the award.

City council to discuss fire department facilities bond next week

The Redondo Beach city council is set to discuss at their regular meeting June 11 a potential bond to improve Fire Department infrastructure.

The agenda item will include estimates to renovate and/or reconstruct six of the department’s core facilities.

The bond discussion began in May after the council decided a six-year question of whether to switch from the city running its own fire department to contracting with Los Angeles County.

CORRECTION:

In the May 30 article, “Metro holds off on South Bay light rail decision” a comment from Metro Project Manager Georgia Sheridan was mischaracterized as saying the proposed right-of-way route for a South By light rail extension would attract more new riders. She instead said that it would be more cost-effective to attract new riders. ER
