About Town Redondo: Police helicopter search, Surf Club on schedule, General Plan update

Redondo Beach Police patch

Helicopter search locates robbery suspect

Two suspects escaping a liquor store robbery on PCH at Avenue E in Redondo Beach late Monday night, July 15, led to a circling Sheriff’s helicopter beaming its spotlight, and one suspect apprehended in a residential yard.

The call came in at 9:07 p.m. from Adams Liquor and Bottle Shop. Two robbers fled, one on foot, into the area east of PCH.

Redondo Beach Police summoned the Sheriff’s helicopter, which used its spotlight and FLIR – Forward Looking Infrared camera – eventually locating a heat source outside of a home in the 300 block of Avenue F.

Local police officers on the ground arrested the man after he initially did not comply with orders, according to Josh Spry, Redondo Beach Police sergeant.

The second suspect has not been caught.

“There is one outstanding suspect that likely fled in a vehicle,” said Sgt. Spry. “This investigation is ongoing to locate that person.”

California Surf Club on for 2024 opening

The California Surf Club is on track to open later this year, according to co-founder Allen Sanford.

He reports that construction is in “full building mode” now, after one of the buildings needed to be reconstructed, because it was “falling down.”

“We’re still expecting a late 2024 opening,” he said.

The project combines two waterfront buildings, the former Ruby’s and the former On the Rocks. The revamped spaces will be connected by outdoor additions to make a 21,000 square foot facility.

City draft general plan update meeting set for July 18

A public meeting for the Redondo Beach Draft General Plan Update, will be held Thursday, July 18, at 6:30 p.m. at city council chambers.

The General Plan Advisory Committee has worked since 2017 to review the city’s land use practices regarding conservation, recreation and parks, open space, and environmental and natural hazards (including noise and safety).

The 27-member committee’s work is expected to guide land use in the city for next 20-25 years.

The General Plan, last updated in 1992, is meant to reflect the goals and values of the community, to respond to new laws, address growth and change, put into action the city’s certified Housing Element (where new housing should be built), and ensure Redondo Beach will be eligible for Federal and State funding in the future.

In March, a Draft General Plan and Land Use Plan/Map was shared with the broader community at a public workshop.

The Draft General Plan and Land Use Plan/Map now enters the final phase of the update process. Later this summer/fall, the City’s Planning Commission is expected to advise the city council on a final draft to go before voters. RB
