Beach Sports: Aquatics, cycling, running, skateboarding, soccer and more

The AYSO Manhattan/Hermosa Beach (Region 18) Girls U10 All-Star Team made history recently becoming the first ever Region 18 GU10 team to play in the State Championships. Aptly named Team Unexpected, a 2-1 victory over Tulare (Region 10) put the girls in the finals held in Cathedral City where the team suffered its first loss of the tournament falling to Covina (Region 602). Fundraisers: In celebration of its recent move to the South Bay, Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC) will host the Seaside Soiree alongside Bo Bridges Gallery on April 5 from 7-10 p.m. The fundraising event will be part of the Fifth Annual Spyder Surf Fest in Hermosa Beach and include a silent auction, hosted bar with light appetizers and music presented by HavocTV. Running: The El Segundo PTA is hosting its 20th Annual Run for Education 5K on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. in front of El Segundo High School at Library Park. The course of the electronically chip-timed street race winds through the hilly streets of El Segundo. A Kids’ Fun Run follows at 9:15 a.m. Registration is available online. Fees are $30 for the 5K and $20 for the Kids Run. Race day registration begins at 6:30 a.m. Awards given to the overall winner and top three finishers in each age category. All K-5th grade 5K finishers receive a medal. Kids Fun Run participants receive a prize. In addition to the race, GI Joe Charles will be holding his $100 Push Up Challenge. Registration is open for the 6th edition of the Hermosa Beach 5000 and City Walk to be held Saturday, April 21. The event includes separate 5K races for men and women along with Kid’s Races. Men begin the 5K run at 8 a.m. followed by the women and the City Walk at 8:45 a.m. and the Kid’s Races that start at 9:50. The fast, cloverleaf course features Pier Plaza, The Strand and the Hermosa Beach Pier. Awards are given to the top five in all 50 age divisions and all participants receive the 6th edition T-Shirt and “Livestrong” type bracelet. Participant medals are given to all kids. Aquatics: Mira Costa’s aquatics program will be hosting a Junior Lifeguard Conditioning class in preparation for the Jr. Lifeguard Swim Test. Sessions run from April 16-May 4 and May 7-25 and will be led by Coach Jon Reichardt and assisted by members of the Mira Costa swim and water polo teams. Cycling: The Los Angeles Velodrome Racing Association (LAVRA) has announced its 2012 race season to be held at the Velo Sports Center, 18400 Avalon Blvd., Carson. Located at the Home Depot Center, the facility provides a safe and healthy environment to ride and is the only world class indoor velodrome in North America hosting athletes from all over the world. The Baxter Time Trial Series of bicycle races has started, and will continue each Sunday through Sept. 30 on a course in Carson, near Torrance. Often called the “race of truth,” a time trial is a race against the clock. There are men’s and women’s categories for several different age groups. Racers are awarded points for placing and winners are announced at the end of the series. The Baxter Series is sponsored by the South Bay Wheelmen, a club for racers, aspiring racers, and those who just love to ride their bike. Participants in the Baxter races must be a club member and have a US Cycling Federation license, but membership and a one-day USCF license can both be obtained at the race. Volleyball: The United States Youth Volleyball League welcomes both boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 15 to play in its Spring 2012 season. The Hermosa Beach season lasts for eight weeks and will start on April 11, ending June 6. The Hermosa Beach league will meet at South Park on Mondays from 6 to 7 p.m. and Wednesdays from 9 to 10 a.m. The USYVL is a volunteer organization and is currently looking for volunteers for the spring 2012 season. We are in need of volunteer coaches, assistant coaches, first-aid administrators (must be currently CPR/first-aid certified), and site directors. Skateboarding: Skatepark PV, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)3 on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, has teamed up with Beachsports and the City of Rolling Hills Estates to host the 2nd Annual SK8 the Hill Event on Saturday, May 5 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the basketball court of Ernie Howlett Park, 25851 Hawthorne Boulevard, Rolling Hills Estates, just north of PV Dr. North. The free event includes ramps, rails and grind boxes to skate on. Food trucks will be there as well as local teams. Surfing: The South Bay Boardriders Club continues its 2011-12 South Bay Surf Series Saturday at 26th Street, Manhattan Beach (sponsored by Pier Surf). Contests are open to non members and include divisions from micro groms (9 and under) up to legends (50+). Future contests will be: Saturday, April 21 at El Porto (sponsored by Surf Concepts) and Saturday May 19 at the Manhattan Pier (sponsored by Spyder Surf).

Soccer: Girls ages 6-12 are invited to participate in the Mira Costa Youth Girls Summer Soccer Camp to be held July 9-13 at the Marine Sports Complex, 1751 Marine Ave., Manhattan Beach. Fitness: AdventurePlex, 1701 Marine Ave., Manhattan Beach invites family members ages 5 and up to improve balance, strength and power on its 35-foot outdoor rock walls, which are open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cost is $8. Also available is a ropes course where groups of seven (ages 8 and up) start each half hour every Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost for the ropes course is $20; advance registration is recommended.
