Bay League baseball champ Mira Costa begins tough playoff run

Mira Costa emerged with the Bay League baseball title on the final day of the regular season and now enters tough competition as the Mustangs begin the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

The Mustangs (21-8) host JSerra (19-12), the Trinity League runner-up, in the opening round on Thursday. The winner will face the winner between No. 6 Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks and Dos Pueblos in the second round next Tuesday.

JSerra entered the playoffs with a six-game winning streak including Saturday’s 6-3 win over Northern Division champion Archbishop Mitty to claim the Boras Classic championship.

“We are very excited about playing JSerra this Thursday,” Mira Costa coach Keith Ramsey said. “It looks to be two very accomplished programs and should be a heck of a game. I like where we are as a team and looking to play our best ball of the year in these playoffs.”

Following a loss at Redondo, Mira Costa captured the Bay League title with a 3-2 home victory when senior pitcher Jared Karros struck out seven and allowed two runs on seven hits.

Redondo (20-9) began the postseason with a Division 2 wild-card game against Long Beach Wilson on Wednesday. The winner advances to the first round at Santa Barbara on Friday.

Also in Division 2, Pioneer League champion El Segundo (19-8) takes on Santa Fe (21-7) on Friday.

Softball

Competing in Division 3, Bay League runner-up Mira Costa (13-11) plays at Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks in the opening round today. The winner advances to play the victor between No. 4 Diamond Bar and Santa Monica in the second round on Tuesday.

In Division 4, 8th-ranked El Segundo (21-6) hosts the wild-card winner between Segerstrom and Harvard-Westlake on Monday.

Bay League champion Palos Verdes (16-7) plays at No. 10 Maranatha in the first round.

Boys Tennis

The strong Bay League has three teams playing in the field of eight in the Open Division with No. 4 Mira Costa (18-1) hosting No. 5 Arcadia (20-1) in the first round on Friday.

Palos Verdes (7-4) is seeded No. 6 and travels to face No. 3 Northwood (15-2) while No. 7 Peninsula (12-10) travels to take on Harvard-Westlake (17-1) in the opening round.

In Division 1, Redondo (8-7) played at Valencia on Wednesday with the winner advancing to face host San Clemente on Friday.
