Hermosa Beach Triathlon
Spotlight: Registration is open for the 2023 Tower 26 Hermosa Beach Triathlon, which will take place on Aug. 13. The entry-level event is open to triathletes of all skill levels and includes a beginner-friendly 1/4 mile ocean swim, a 10-mile bike ride, and a 3 mile run on the Strand. The triathlon is sanctioned by USA Triathlon, the national governing body for the sport. To register for the triathlon and more information, go to hermosabeachtri.com.

New family support group
A new in-person family support group meets at 5:30 p.m. the second Wednesday of the month at the allcove Youth Wellness Center at the Beach Cities Health District, 514 N. Prospect Ave, Redondo Beach. The support group focuses on families with youth or young adults ages 12 to 25 with mental health conditions. To register, call 310-374-5706.
Sunsational Sandcastles
The Roundhouse Aquarium on the Manhattan Beach Pier is accepting entries for its third annual summer sand sculpture contest to Aug. 1. Build a sand sculpture on your own time at any location. Submit a photo of your entry online. Entry fee: $30. Information: roundhouseaquarium.org/sandcastle.

The Redondo Beach Police Department’s Domestic Violence Victims Advocacy Program is holding a back to school gift card drive. Gift cards may be dropped off at the police station lobby through Aug. 16. 401 Diamond St., Redondo Beach.

Girls volleyball championships
The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) will host the Junior National Girls Championships on the volleyball courts north and south of the Hermosa Beach Pier, between 10th and 15th streets, from Thursday, July 20 through Tuesday, July 25.
Manhattan Beach Open Tennis Tournament
Now in its 55th year, the tournament is from Thursday, July 20 through Sunday, July 23 at the Live Oak Park tennis courts and the Mira Costa High School tennis courts. Free admission.

Shakespeare by the Sea

Instrument Petting Zoo
Presented by The Long Beach Symphony, the Instrument Petting Zoo teaches children about each instrument family and provides an opportunity for children and parents alike to explore the foundations of an orchestra. Community members are invited to join Mayor Ray Jackson for his next monthly conversation and beautification event, 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Hermosa Beach Community Theatre, 710 Pier Ave. Hear about Hermosa’s Parks Master Plan, then work in the garden in front of the community center. The annual Concerts in the Park series at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach continues with Radio Royalty, a female-fronted 80’s dance band. The series features concerts every Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Polliwog Park amphitheater through Sept. 5. Admission is free. Concert-goers are welcome to bring blankets, lawn chairs and picnics. The Beach Cities Health District is offering free fitness classes Mondays in July and August. July’s program: Mindful Yoga. August: Zumba. Volunteer opportunity
The Hermosa Five-O will host a workshop at 10 a.m. in which participants make no-sew blankets for shelter dogs. All materials provided. The blankets will go to dogs at local shelters.
