Baywatch Community Calendar 8-17-23

Tri Bourne and Trevor Crabb with their Manhattan Beach Walk of Fame plaques they were awarded last August, after winning the 2023 AVP Manhattan Beach Open. On Thursday, August 17, they will be joined by Sara Hughes and Kelley Kolinske, winners of the Women’s 2023 AVP Manhattan Beach Open, in having their plaques installed on the Manhattan Beach Pier. The Walk of Fame ceremony starts at 3:30 p.m.

Manhattan Beach Open

The Manhattan Beach Open gets underway Friday, Aug. 18., and continues through Sunday, Aug. 20 at the Manhattan Beach Pier. General admission is free, but tickets for premier seating are paid. Prior to the tournament, 2022’s men’s and women’s champions Tri Bourne, Trevor Crabb, Sara Hughes and Kelley Kolinske will be honored at a Walk of Fame Ceremony, 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17 at the Manhattan Beach Pier. New art exhibit

“Life on the Palos Verdes Peninsula” is on display through Sept. 23 at the Malaga Cove Library, 2400 Vía Campesina, Palos Verdes Estates. The exhibit features paintings by fourteen artists.

Chorale auditions

Los Cancioneros Master Chorale has openings for experienced singers to join its upcoming 75th season. Mental Health First Aid Training

Free concert

Enjoy a free performance of the Itty Bitty Big Band on Aug. 26, noon to 2 p.m., at Library Park in El Segundo. Dale Velzy commemorative plaque 

The plaque will be unveiled and celebrated on Aug. 27, 2 to 6 p.m., at the Hermosa Beach Museum before its installation in Manhattan Beach. The plaque recognizes Velzy’s contributions to surf culture. No tickets necessary. The museum is at the Hermosa Beach Community Center, 710 Pier Ave.

Hermosa Beach Movies at the Beach

Two movies will be shown just south of the Hermosa Beach Pier. Sept. 2: “Ratatouille.” Sept. 9: “Top Gun: Maverick.” The movies will be shown at dusk, approximately 7:45 p.m. Free, with donations gladly accepted. Bring a blanket and low-back beach chairs. Information: hermosamovies.com.

Sports luncheons to resume

The South Bay Athletic Club will kick off its 58th year at noon on Sept. 8 at H.T. Grill, 1701 S Catalina Ave., Redondo Beach. The group, which welcomes guests and new members, meets Fridays from September to June for lunch, friendship and to hear speakers ranging from John Papadakis’ annual USC football report to CIF Assistant Commissioner Thom Simmons to USA Diving Chairman Dave Gascon. A local high school coach also speaks most weeks. The SBAC has sponsored the annual South Bay All-Star boys and girls basketball, baseball and softball games. It is looking for new members to help put on the games. The luncheon is open to the public. Lunch is $30.

Torrance blood drive 

The South End Racquet and Health Club will host a blood drive on Sept. 11, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. 2800 Skypark Drive, Torrance. Appointments are recommended, but walk-ins are welcome.
