Dedication: Mira Costa High School’s track & field program will dedicate the newly installed Bob Fish Memorial Record Holder’s Wall on Wednesday, March 20 at 3 p.m. at Waller Stadium. Working with coaches Robert Calderon and Moe Russell and the boosters, Fish had the record board created. It was one of his last acts before passing away from pancreatic cancer in November. Following the dedication, the Mustangs will host Palos Verdes in a Bay League meet. Former Olympian Jeff Atkinson (now a Palos Verdes coach) still holds Mira Costa’s record for the 3200m (9:03:77) set in 1979.
Running: Registration is ongoing for the Hermosa Beach 5,000 which will take place Saturday, April 20. Events begin at 7:30 a.m. with what Race Director Jeff Atkinson dubs the world’s only Skateboard 5K. Riders will receive skate T-shirts, commemorative bracelets and finisher’s medals. The Baby Jogger 5K ensues immediately after the Skateboard 5K, followed by the Men’s 5K, the Women’s 5K, the City Walk and concluding with the Kid’s Races (ages 2-12). Entry fees are $35 for the 5K run/walk; $25 for the Skateboard 5K and Kid’s Races (add $5 after April 1). Unique awards will be given to the top five in all 50 age divisions. Fundraisers: The 2013 Power of the Ocean Event on March 23 will celebrate The Ocean of Hope (O2H) – the exclusive fundraising organization for The Sarcoma Alliance. Celebrate with friends and advocates of The Sarcoma Alliance as we come together to raise money and awareness for cancer patients and their families. Enjoy great food and drinks from Kona Brewing Company while listening to local musician Kapali Long. The night also features original photography by the South Bay’s Ken Pagliaro and the story of world class paddleboarder Jamie Mitchell in the movie Decade of Dominance. We will also be showing a short clip about the Catalina Classic by Chris Aguilar and Fin Film Company. Tickets are $10, or $15 at the door. A Co-ed Beach Volleyball League in Hermosa Beach is slated to begin Tuesday on the north side of the Hermosa Beach Pier. Best 2-out-of-3 matches are played from 6-8 p.m. for six weeks followed by two weeks of playoffs. Registration must be made at the Community Center at 710 Pier Ave. in Hermosa Beach prior to league start date. Cost is $240 per team plus $5 for each non-Hermosa Beach resident. Registration is open for the Torrance Youth Volleyball Program. A Youth Volleyball Clinic is open for kids in grades 2-4 and the Youth Volleyball League for grades 4-8 is tentatively scheduled to begin Saturday, April 6. Both programs are structured to teach basic fundamentals and rules of the game. Registration ends Friday, March 22. Flag Football: Co-ed Flag Football on the Beach returns to 10th Street and The Strand in Hermosa Beach when its Thursday league kicks off April 25. Alternating guy and girls quarterbacks, teams play two 20-minute halves beginning at 6:30 p.m. each week. The 7-week season is followed by two weeks of playoffs. Cost is $265 per team for City Registration and must be made at the Community Center, 710 Pier Ave. in Hermosa Beach prior to the first day of the league. Swimming: Registration is now open for the 2013 Dwight Crum Pier to Pier Swim. The swim will be held on Sunday, Aug. 4. Cycling: The South Bay Wheelmen hosts a group ride on the first Saturday of every month. Cyclists meet in the parking lot of the Catalina Coffee Company at 126 N. Catalina Ave, Redondo Beach. The moderately-paced ride is 30-40 miles with some climbing and regroups at several points so no one gets left behind. The Wheelmen also hosts the Baxter Time Trial Series of bicycle races that began this week and will continue each Sunday through Sept. 29 on a course in Carson. Men and women divisions compete in several age groups where racers are awarded points for placing and winners are announced at the end of the series. For more information, visit southbaywheelmen.org.
