Beach sports – 16th Street VB tourney gets serious

The intensity of play during the finals of the 61st Annual 16th Street Labor Day Weekend Volleyball Tournament rivaled that of an AVP championship. And so did the prize money. Even the traditionally raucous crowd was uncharacteristically sober. The only fan who appeared calm was Joe Lewis. During the Calcutta that preceded the tournament Lewis had bought the two teams that advanced to the finals. The finals matched AVP veteran Matt Prosser (6-foot-7) against younger, taller (6-foot-9), former USC star John Hackett. Prosser and teammates John Star, Manny Contreras and Rhett Rudnicki kept Hackett in check and walked away with the big baggie. Lewis walked away two baggies and the Lee Campbell MVP award.
