Beach Sports – South Bay Dozen

Over 100 lifeguards and junior lifeguards, along with friends and family, from ages 7 to 65, competed in the 14th Annual South Bay Dozen at Torrance Beach on Saturday, June 28. Event directors Tom Burdiak and Mike Murphy coordinated the decathlon-style competition, which has  12 events, including dory, swim, run, paddleboard and surf skis races. Prizes included surfboards by local shapers Jose Barahona and Joe Bark and Buel Surf, of Santa Cruz. Proceeds benefited the Jimmy Miller Foundation, which offers ocean therapy to veterans. Sponsors included Beach Cities Orthopedic, Xero Solar and Zinka sunscreen 

Tom O’Neill of New York, was the top male point earner, followed by his training partner Pat Kilgallen. South Bay Lifeguard Pat Jacobson, of Redondo Beach, was third.

South Bay Lifeguard Kelsey Cummings, of El Segundo, was the top female point earner, followed by lifeguard Jenna Solberg, of Torrance and April O’Gorman, of Florida. Top finishers in the under 19 division were Danny Gonzales, of Inglewood and Sidney Brouwer, of Venice.
