Warren Miller returns to Hermosa

For more than half a century the screening of Warren Miller’s annual ski film has signaled the start of the winter sports season. This year, Warren Miller’s 72nd annual film is aptly titled “Winter Starts Now.” The film screens at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 10 at the Hermosa Beach Community Theatre, 710 Pier Ave. Prior to the screening, at 6 p.m., the Hermosa Beach Historical Museum will host a reception.

Holiday fundraiser

North Manhattan holiday stroll

Community members are invited to North Manhattan Beach on Dec. 2 for the Holiday Stroll. The fun kicks off at 5 p.m. with a parade featuring golf carts, the Manhattan Beach Police and Fire departments and of course, Santa. Throughout the evening there will be roaming carolers, a scavenger hunt, games and local business and artist pop-up shops. Plus, local stores and restaurants will be open for business. It all takes place from 5 to 9 p.m. on Highland Avenue between 32nd and 40th streets. The Holiday Stroll is presented by the North Manhattan Beach Business Improvement District.

Local Love

Riviera Village holiday stroll

Holiday concert

The South Bay Chamber Music Society’s December concert features The Thies Consort, performing music from the piano trio’s repertoire. The concert will be presented twice. The first performance will be at 8 p.m. on Dec. 3 in the Recital Hall of the Music Department at Los Angeles Harbor College, 1111 Figueroa Place, Wilmington. The Recital Hall is located in the Music Building at the north end of the campus. The second performance will be held at 3 p.m. on Dec. 5 at the Pacific Unitarian Church, 5621 Montemalaga Drive, Rancho Palos Verdes. In order to maintain a safe environment for all, concertgoers must be vaccinated, and must be masked during the concert.

Christmas comedy revue

Kentwood Players presents “The Ultimate Christmas Show (Abridged),” a holiday comedy revue. The show opens Dec. 3 and continues through Dec. 19. Sandpipers Holiday Homes Tour

Sandpipers Holiday Homes Tour is back in person. Tour three South Bay homes decorated to the hilt and transformed by local artisans and florists. The holiday boutique is back, too, with jewelry, wine, clothing and more.

Dec. 3-5. Tickets can be purchased for $30 from a Sandpipers member or on Eventbrite. The price goes up to $35 on Dec. 3.

Holiday book sale

The Friends of the Redondo Beach Public Library will hold a holiday book sale from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Dec. 4 at the Main Library, 303 N. Pacific Coast Highway. The sale features a hand-curated collection of books, specially selected for gifting. Free book bag with purchase.

Let it Snow Redondo

Seaside Lagoon will be transformed into a winter wonderland on Dec. 4.

The Redondo Beach Police Department, with help from event sponsor Sky One, is bringing 20 tons of real snow to Seaside Lagoon. The department’s Let it Snow Redondo event will also have crafts, cookies, cocoa, a bounce house, Santa and more. Admission is free. In addition, the police department’s Domestic Violence Advocacy Program will be holding a toy and coat drive. The program is collecting gift cards, new, unwrapped toys and new coats (kids and adult sizes). Let it Snow Redondo takes place from 1-5 p.m. at Seaside Lagoon, 200 Portofino Way.

Menorah lighting

There will be a menorah lighting at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 5 in the plaza at Manhattan Village Shopping Center, 3200 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Manhattan Beach.

Hanukkah celebration

This celebration at The Point in El Segundo will feature Hanukkah traditions such as dreidel game, plus storytelling, crafts, festive eats and music. 1-3 p.m. on Dec. 5. Sponsored by Congregation Tikvat Jacob.

“Messiah”

Santa Stroll

The 2nd annual California Great Santa Stroll is set for 9 a.m. on Dec. 11 at the Hermosa Beach Pier Plaza. Hundreds of Santas will be running, walking or strolling along The Strand to benefit Mychal’s Learning Place, which provides programs for youth and young adults with learning disabilities. All participants will be given a Santa suit with their registration.

Toy drive

The Point in El Segundo is partnering with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles for a Holiday Block Party and Toy Drive. Holiday car cruise

Cruise at the Beach returns to King Harbor for a 13th year on Dec. 11, noon-6 p.m. The holiday car and bike show features live music, trophies for the best entries, a 50/50 raffle, a toy drive, a Santa Claus photo booth with a classic Cadillac, games and more. The event kicks off at noon with the South Bay Coastal Division Naval Sea Cadets as the official Color Guard and the Pledge of Allegiance. Vehicle registration is $25, which includes a T-shirt, dash plaque and goodie bag.

Holiday concert

The community is invited to a free holiday concert 2-4 p.m. on Dec. 11 at the Redondo Beach Pier. It will take place on Fisherman’s Wharf, the west end of the pier, behind Tony’s. In addition to live holiday music, there will be a charity toy drive, a selfie wall and sponsor giveaways.

“Nutcracker” in Palos Verdes

Manhattan Beach Pier fireworks

This year’s Skechers Manhattan Beach Holiday Fireworks Festival is set for Dec. 12, 4-8 p.m., at the pier. Fireworks will go off at 7 p.m. Attendees are welcome to bring blankets, beach chairs and picnic dinners. For safety reasons drones are not permitted.

Holiday fundraiser

Registration is open for the second annual Light Up the Beach Cities, an online holiday decorating contest benefitting the Roundhouse Aquarium’s educational programs. Southern California residents and businesses are invited to enter. The entry fee is $30. Contestants are asked to upload photos of their decorations. Voting will then take place online.

Santa in Hermosa Beach

With a little help from the city of Hermosa Beach and the L.A. County Fire Department, Santa will be visiting Hermosa Beach neighborhoods 4:30-6 p.m. on Dec. 15. The Drive-By Holiday Parade features Santa on his sleigh.

The Redondo Beach Police Department’s Domestic Violence Advocacy Program is hosting a toy and coat drive until Dec. 15. “The Shop Around the Corner”

Students in El Camino College’s Theatre Department will perform “The Shop Around the Corner” live on the Campus Theatre stage. The performance schedule is 8 p.m. on Dec. 3, Dec., 4, Dec. 10 and Dec. 11 and 3 p.m. on Dec. 5 and Dec. 12.

“The Shop Around the Corner” will be performed in the style of an old-fashioned radio show, complete with microphones, soap commercials and live sound effects.

CPR, first aid classes

Registration is open for adult and pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED training at the Joslyn Center in Manhattan Beach. Classes will be held on Saturdays in 2022. The dates are Jan. 8, Feb. 5, April 2, June 11, Aug. 6, Oct. 8 and Dec. 3. Each class is from 8 a.m-3 p.m. and limited to 20 persons. Must be 18 or older.

Redondo Beach Super Bowl 10k/5k Run/Walk

Registration is open for the 44th annual Redondo Beach Super Bowl 10k Run & 5k Run/Walk, which will take place on Feb. 13.

There’s also a Health & Fitness Expo that starts on Feb. 12, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and continues race day from 6-11 a.m.

The start/finish line and the expo will be at 200 Portofino Way. The race course will take runners along the Redondo Beach harbor, Esplanade and waterfront, with the course ending at the Seaside Lagoon.

A 1k Kids Fun Run begins at 7 a.m., followed by the 10k at 7:30 a.m., the 10k Baby Buggy Run at 8:15 a.m. and the 5k Run/Walk at 8:30 a.m. 

The entry fee for the 10k, 5k and Baby Buggy 10k is $45 Dec. 1-Feb. 11 and $50 race weekend. The Kid’s Fun Run is $20 until Feb. 11 and $25 race weekend.

Torrance art show

Destination: Art’s Seventh Anniversary Exhibition is underway with nearly a hundred paintings on display. The diverse paintings are the work of forty-nine artist members of Destination: Art, a non-profit studio and gallery art cooperative in Torrance.

Free rain barrels

Residents of the West Basin Municipal Water District may now register at westbasin.org for home delivery or a drive-through pick-up of a free rain barrel.

Seven hundred rain barrels are available for free home delivery. Residents interested in this option must register by Jan. 20.

The district will also host two drive-through pick-up events to distribute 400 barrels at each event. The first pick-up will be held from 8-11 a.m. on Jan. 29 at West Basin’s Edward C. Little Water Recycling Facility in El Segundo.

The second pick-up will be at West Basin’s headquarters in Carson from 8-11 a.m. on Feb. 5. Advance registration for the rain barrels is required.

Charity archery tournament

South Bay Archery Lessons’ 2021 “Shoot for a Cure” Archery Tournament benefiting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is scheduled for Dec. 4-5. The fee is $40.

In a small supportive group setting, children living with cancer will talk, learn and grow together.
