Friends of Banning Museum to Host Special Historic Lecture

“California Confederates:

The Curious Tale of the Schooner J. M. Chapman and the Knights of the Golden Circle” Friends of Banning Museum invites the community to join us for our next “Keeping History Alive” lecture at the Banning Museum, located at 401 East “M” Street, Wilmington, CA 90744. The lecture presented by author Michael D. White, vocational maritime historian and researcher, will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the historic stagecoach barn on Saturday, June 22, 2019.

Mr. White will be sharing the story of how in 1863 a group of California secessionists conspire to outfit a small schooner as a privateer, steal gold and silver shipments bound for the Union, and revitalize the increasingly cash-starved  Confederacy. This lecture will tell the true story of how their
plot was hatched, discovered and thwarted. There will be a question and answer session after the
lecture.

Admission to the event is FREE for Friends of Banning Museum members and children under 12. Non-members are $5.00. For more details about this event or to RSVP, please contact Friends of Banning Museum at (310) 548-2005. Information on the Museum can also be found at

The Banning Museum is a facility of the City of Los Angeles, Department of Recreation and Parks and is operated in cooperation with Friends of Banning Museum. Friends of Banning Museum is a non-profit organization whose mission is to “Preserve History, Promote Education, and Inspire

Karl Modery – Fascinat’n Gershwin @ El Segundo Old Town Music Hall
Jun 30 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Fascinatin’ Gershwin is a live 2-hour show about the life and music of one of America’s greatest composers, George Gershwin. Smartly led by actor and pianist Karl Modery, Fascinatin’ Gershwin brings to life the indelible story of George Gershwin…from his ragtime start in Tin Pan Alley to the classical compositions we know and love today. The name of the surprise singer has not been revealed, but there’s more…

Modery’s storytelling is compelling as the story itself. He visually and musically intertwines a complex yet effortless montage of music, storytelling, and video that catapults the audience back in time to Gershwin’s early days…his inspirations, influences, ups and down. Within moments, we are transposed to New York City in the 1930s and wish it would never end. When the show is over, and the lights come on, many just sit in reflection – like watching credits on the big screen – digesting the surreality of it all.

Fascinatin’ Gershwin brings to all ages an opportunity to learn, understand, and revel in a time of chaos and artistic melody. Who can forget the timeless Rhapsody in Blue? Though George Gerschwin died at the age of 38, his legacy lives on through a compelling and intimate show that you don’t want to miss.

Fascinatin’ Gershwin is a tribute to one of America’s greatest composers who not only defined America’s voice on an international stage but changed the music that is still being recorded today. We hope to see you there for this special event on Sunday June 30, 2019, 7 – 9 p.m. at the El Segundo Old Town Music Hall, 140 Richmond St, El Segundo, CA 90245
