Tom Brookes was original Hermosa Beach Double Deuce Dangler

A celebration of Tom Brookes life is scheduled for Friday, November 20 at 11 a.m. in front of the Tim Kelly Lifeguard Memorial Statue at the Hermosa Beach Pier. Brookes served as best man at Kelly’s wedding. A paddle out and burial at sea is planned for the following morning at 22nd Street in Hermosa Beach.

Reporter’s note: Alfonso Barrera Jr., a longtime fixture in the Hermosa pier area and known for his friendly smile, succumbed to respiratory failure and pneumonia late Monday night on Oct. 12 at Little Company of Mary Hospital.

Hermosa Beach Surfers Walk of Fame Pioneer inductee Bob “Beach Captain” Bergstrom earned his title for his leadership role in the beach culture in the late ‘40s and early ‘50s. He built some of the first California balsa surfboards and catamarans in his garage.
