Beach Cities Sports: Cycling, running, tennis, volleyball and more

Beach Volleyball: CBVA Men’s and Women’s Open tournaments will be held Saturday at the Manhattan Beach Pier. Other divisions competing will be Men’s A and B along with Women’s A. The MB Surf Volleyball tournament for boys and girls 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U age groups takes place Wednesday, July 25 at Marine Street in Manhattan Beach. Visit CBVA.com to register.

 

Cycling: The 57th Annual Chevron Manhattan Beach Grand Prix takes place Sunday, July 22 at Live Oak Park in Manhattan Beach. New this year will be two 25-minute races with Category 5 and Women’s Category 4-5 events. There will be a $20,500 maximum cash purse.with six state championships on the line. The popular Kids Race begins at noon, followed by Women’s Pro 1-3 and Men’s Pro 1-2 competition. Mbgp.com.

 

Tennis: The 51st Annual Manhattan Beach Open Tennis Tournament presented by Audi Pacific will be held July 26-29 at Live Oak Park and Mira Costa High School from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. Open to players 16 and over, the single elimination tournament features Men’s and Women’s Open, Singles and Doubles Divisions to Amateur Divisions. Running: The Manhattan Beach Grand Prix has also added a 1-mile running race this year with a prize purse of $4,000. South Bay runner Stewart Harwell partnered with the MB Grand Prix Committee, Village Runner’s Mike Ward and Chevron to add two races of 300 runners each – a women’s race at 12:30 p.m. followed by the men 15 minutes later. Participants receive commemorative run tees, chip timing and there will be medals for the top three finishers in each age division. Race entry is $40. Villagerunner.com.

 

Basketball: Dave Miller, Emmy Award winning NBA analyst, will be hosting his 21st annual  MVPCamp.com summer basketball camps at Aviation Sports Complex in Redondo Beach. Session III is a coed camp and will held July 30-Aug. 3. The camps is held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and open to boys and girls ages 5 to 14. Volleyball: National High School Coach of the Year Tommy Chaffins is having a new series of boys and girls volleyball clinics for players in 3rd thru 8th grade starting Monday, July 23rd thru Aug. 9th.  All clinics begin at 6:30 p.m. and are held at Redondo Union High School. The United States Youth Volleyball League (USYVL) is holding registration for the 2018 fall program in Hermosa Beach. The instructional volleyball league will provide boys and girls ages 7-15 the opportunity to learn and play volleyball in a fun, safe, and supervised environment. The eight-week developmental league provides instruction while practices and games operate in a coed format and offer participants the opportunity to develop self-esteem and confidence. The league runs Sept. 10 through Oct. 29 at South Park. Practices for the league will be held on Mondays 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. and games on Wednesdays 5:30 – 6:30 p.m Registration is available online at usyvl.org and includes a volleyball, t-shirt, and end of season participation award.

 

Sports Camps: Founded in 1972, Peninsula Sports Camps is offering camps for boys and girls ages 5-14. Run by Tom Maier, one of the South Bay’s most prominent basketball coaches with over 700 wins and 4 CIF titles, the camp includes fundamentals, games (everyone plays), guest speakers, camp T-shirt, awards and contests. Camps run Monday through Friday from 9 a.m .- 4 p.m. or 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. featuring basketball (July 23-27, July 30 – Aug. 3), baseball (July 23-27), and soccer (July 30 – Aug. 3). Fees: $270 full day, $150 ½ day. Camps are held at Palos Verdes High School, 600 Cloyden Rd., Palos Verdes Estates. Baseball: Beach City Baseball & Softball Academy will offer four weeks of camps during July and August. Open to boys and girls ages 5-12, the baseball and softball camps will focus on drills that will improve fundamentals of: hitting, outfield, infield, base running, sliding, and more.  The El Segundo Camp (430 E.
