Honors: Cal Hi Sports named Mira Costa High School its Division 2 State School of the Year. The honior was the first for the Mustangs who won a state title in girls golf, captured the CIF Southern California Division 1 championship in boys volleyball and their baseball team won the state championship in the prestigious Boras Classic tournament.
Beach Volleyball: The California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) will be holding tournament in Manhattan Beach on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 20-21. Men’s and Women’s AA divisions compete on Saturday with Men’s and Women’s A competition on Sunday. On Saturday, Aug. 27 in Hermosa Beach, the Campsurf Men’s AAA, A and Campvolley Women’s A tournaments take place. Fundraising: The Manhattan Beach Badminton Club (MBCC) Junior Foundation’s 1st annual “Pub at the Club” Beer and Food Festival will be held Sunday, Aug. 28 from 1-5 p.m. MBBC will welcome more than 35 local and regional premium craft breweries and restaurants to the South Bay and will donate 100 percent of the ticket sales to their Junior Foundation Programs. MBBC Jr. Foundation is a charity dedicated to developing champions on and off the court, including special needs and para-athletes. MBBC is located at 516 18th Street. Baseball: South Bay Refinery Baseball and Softball will be hosting a West Torrance Field Restoration Golf Tournament Thursday, Oct. 27 at Los Verdes Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes. The four-person scramble tournament begins at 1 p.m. with awards dinner to follow. Entry fee of $150 includes: Green fees, cart, tee package putting contest, lunch and dinner. Sponsorship packages are available. Proceeds will be used for improvements of the former Babe Ruth field located at Entradero Park in Torrance. Triathlon: Registration is open for the Day at the Beach Triathlon to be held at 7 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 16 in Hermosa Beach. The event includes a 1/4 mile ocean swim, 10 mile bike and 3 mile run.
