Basketball: Dave Miller, former New Orleans Hornets/NCAA basketball coach and current co-host of the KIA Motors Laker Shoot Around Show and Laker Line Post Game Show on 710 ESPN Radio, will be hosting his summer basketball camp Aug. 6-10 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Aviation Gym, 1935 Manhattan Beach Blvd. in Redondo Beach. Open to boys and girls ages 5-14, the camp teaches fundamentals of the game, sportsmanship and positive values. The primary goal of these camps will be to teach the fundamentals of the game. Baseball: South Bay Surf Baseball will be holding four 5-day camps featuring members of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Each session includes stations that teach baseball fundamentals, daily games, individual coaching on batting and pitching mechanics, weekly contests, prizes and player evaluations along with visits from Angel players such as Peter Bourjos, Mike Trout, Mark Trumbo and Bobby Wilson. They will speak, sign autographs and take pictures with the campers. Open to boys and girls ages 5-13, sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Aug. 6-10 and Aug. 13-17 at Alta Vista Park in Redondo Beach. Fees are $200 for each 5-day camp. The 35th Annual Peninsula Soccer Camp will take place at Palos Verdes High School Aug. 6-10. Open to boys and girls ages 6-14, sessions run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (full-day $230) and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (half-day $115). There will be guest speakers, an experienced coaching staff, and each camper receives a soccer ball. Volleyball: California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) will be holding two tournaments throughout the weekend at the Hermosa Beach Pier. On Saturday, the Women’s A division competes followed by the Men’s A division on Sunday. On Saturday, Aug. 11 the Junior Hermosa Beach Open tournament takes place featuring boys and girls 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U divisions. All tournaments start at 9 a.m. and cost $42.50 per team. Registration is open for the United States Youth Volleyball League (USYVL) Fall 2012 season in Hermosa Beach. The co-ed league is open to players of any level and consists of four age divisions: 7-8, 9-10, 11-2 and 13-15. Games are played Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at South Park beginning Sept. 10 and running through Oct. 29. The American Tennis Foundation has teamed up with West End and South End tennis clubs to hold a charity tennis tournament from Aug. 13-19 to benefit local high school tennis programs. Open to all levels of play, there will be men’s and women’s singles open division with a purse of $5,000. Men’s and women’s doubles divisions compete under the National Tennis Rating Program levels 3.5 through 5.0. Entry fees are $53.71 for singles and $35.50 per players for doubles. Bring the gym to the water with stand-up paddleboard yoga, stretching and core workouts. One-hour classes taught daily. Cycling: The South Bay Wheelmen cycling club hosts a ride every Saturday at 9 a.m. Riders meet in the parking lot of the Catalina Coffee Company, 126 N. Catalina Ave, Redondo Beach. The moderately-paced ride is about 30 miles with some climbing. It regroups at several points so no one gets left behind. A number of South Bay Wheelmen who now race started out with us on this ride. Riders must be at least 12 years old and be on a road bike.

The Los Angeles Velodrome Racing Association, LAVRA, is in the midst of its 2012 race season at the Velo Sports Center, 18400 Avalon Blvd., Carson. Located at the Home Depot Center, the facility provides a safe and healthy environment to ride and is the only world-class indoor velodrome in North America, hosting athletes from all over the world. The Baxter Time Trial Series of bicycle races has started and will continue each Sunday through Sept. 30 on a course in Carson, near Torrance. Often called the “race of truth,” a time trial is a race against the clock. There are men’s and women’s categories for several different age groups. Racers are awarded points for placing and winners are announced at the end of the series. The Baxter Series is sponsored by the South Bay Wheelmen, a club for racers, aspiring racers and those who just love to ride their bikes. Participants in the Baxter races must be a club member and have a US Cycling Federation license, but membership and a one-day USCF license can both be obtained at the race. Fitness: The 11th annual Playa del Rey Aquathlon will be held Sunday, Aug. 12 beginning at 8 a.m. Registration is available for the aquathlon (swim/run), 5k run, 1-mile ocean swim, or 1-mile sand sprint (with some fun obstacles). Each participant receives a PdR race t-shirt and FUEL beach towel. Festivities include food, music and raffle. Proceeds benefit Heal the Bay. For more information, visit playadelrun.com.

Join the Center for Health & Fitness and the Blue Zone Project for a free 10-week Zumba® class that helps participants dance their way into shape with easy-to-follow moves that tone and sculpt the body. AdventurePlex, 1701 Marine Ave., Manhattan Beach, invites family members ages 5 and up to improve balance, strength and power on its 35-foot outdoor rock walls, which are open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cost is $8. Also available is a ropes course where groups of seven (ages 8 and up) start each half hour every Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost for the ropes course is $20; advance registration is recommended.
