On Mar. 10, Manhattan Beach City Councilmember Wayne Powell took a flight over the city in an lightweight plane or ultralight.

“I decided to do an ultralight flight after seeing the aircraft fly over our coastline a few times and hearing a friend talk about how exciting the flight was,” Powell said.

It was his first time in an ultralight, although Powell has been working on getting his private pilot’s license.

The Hawthorne-based flight school, Pacific Blue Air, was in the news last week when a pilot who was a former contestant on the television show The Bachelor crashed her plane and died.

Powell is scheduled to speak with the company’s owner, Courtney Brin, and the pilot with whom he flew, Henry Boger, on his Internet radio show, Powell to the People, on Apr. 4. ER
