Volleyball: Beach volleyball and surfing come together when the Jimmy Miller Memorial Fund and Dig4Kids Education Foundation present the 4th annual Dig 4 Jimmy Surf N Turf competition Sunday at the Manhattan Beach Pier. A three tourney promotion is being offered throughout April for the Smackfest Birthday Bash Coed 4’s event (April 27), the 20th Annual Smackfest tournament (July 27) and the Smackfest Beach Olympics (Sept. 14). Space is limited to the first 50 teams (or 200 participants) who will receive $20 off per person. A Tuesday-night 4-person Co-ed Beach Volleyball League begins May 21 from 6-8 p.m. north of the Hermosa Beach Pier. Six weeks of regular season play is followed by two weeks of playoffs. Registration must be made at the Community Center, 710 Pier Ave. in Hermosa Beach prior to league start date. Cost is $240 per team plus $5 per person for non-Hermosa Beach residents. Football: The Redondo Beach Youth Football & Cheer is now taking mail in registration. Forms can be downloaded at eteamz.com/redondobeach and mailed to RBYFC, P.O. Box 1006, Redondo Beach CA 90278. There will also be a walk-up registration on Sunday from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Perry Park, 2301 Grant Ave in Redondo Beach. In order to receive the early bird discount all fees need to be received no later than April 28.

Registration is now open for the 2013 Dwight Crum Pier to Pier Swim. The swim will be held on Sunday, Aug. 4. Golf: El Camino College will be hosting its 26th Annual Warrior Athletics Golf Classic on Friday, May 10 at the Los Verdes Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes. Entry fee of $150/person includes green fees, cart, mulligan package, tee package, all contests, dinner and five raffle tickets. Sponsorship packages are available. Cycling: On Sunday, May 19, The Tour de Pier will bring the popular fitness activity of stationary cycling to the Manhattan Beach Pier to raise money for both cancer and children’s charities that include: The Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research; The Livestrong Foundation; The Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach; and The Friendship Circle of the South Bay. Up to 400 bikes will be set up for this four-hour event that begins at 9 a.m. and which will be hosted by seven-time U.S. Ocean Ironman and Emmy-nominated sports broadcaster Craig B. Hummer. Also scheduled to appear are pro cyclists Tony Cruz and Rahsaan Bahati, beach volleyball Olympic gold medalists Eric Fonoimoana and Kerri Walsh Jennings, Olympic gold medal winning water polo player Heather Petri and former NBA star and NBATV commentator Brent Barry. The South Bay Wheelmen hosts a group ride on the first Saturday of every month. Cyclists meet in the parking lot of the Catalina Coffee Company, 126 N. Catalina Ave, Redondo Beach at 9 a.m. The moderately-paced ride is 30-40 miles with some climbing and regroups at several points so no one gets left behind. The Wheelmen also hosts the Baxter Time Trial Series of bicycle races that began this week and will continue each Sunday through Sept. 29 on a course in Carson. Men and women divisions compete in several age groups where racers are awarded points for placing and winners are announced at the end of the series. Rugby: Open to boys and girls ages 12-18, the Palos Verdes Rugby Summer Camp will be held Mon.-Fri. July 22-Aug. 2 from 2-5:30 p.m. each day at Malaga Cove. Celebrate World Oceans Day on Saturday, June 8 with a 5K family beach run/walk beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Manhattan Beach Pier. The 1st Annual Roundhouse World Oceans Day Fundraiser benefits the Roundhouse Aquarium. Entry fee of $35/person includes T-shirt, water, refreshments, electronic timing and post-run raffle. Registration is open for the 20th annual Village Runner 4th of July 5K Run/Community Walk, and Firecracker 5K in Redondo Beach. Early registration prices for adults and kids running the 5K is $30 (add $5 after June 27). New sponsors Land Rover South Bay, RemedyPharm and Providence Little Company of Mary will assist in the festivities which include a two-day Expo, costume contest and parade of the previous men’s and women’s winners. The race, which draws over 4,000 runners and walkers, begins on Thursday, July 4 at 8 a.m., starting and finishing at Riviera Village. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Redondo Beach Firefighters Association and local area schools. Leading up to the race, weekly training runs and running socials will be held. All participants will receive a 4th of July Run T-shirt. There will be chip timing, age division awards and cash prizes to the top three overall male and female runners in the 5K run. Triathlon: Registration is ongoing for the 9th annual Redondo Beach Triathlon sponsored by California Health Plans. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, June 9 at the Veteran’s Park/Pier area in Redondo Beach. All of the proceeds go to Cheer for Children, a non-profit organization that gives seasonal parties and raises money for acutely ill children at Harbor UCLA Medical Center. The USAT sanctioned scenic course event consists of a 1/2-mile swim, 6-mile bike, and 2-mile run. Space is limited to the first 600 entries. A non-competitive mini-sprint (half the distances) is also available. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each division and the top two relay teams. Sprint fees are $75 (ages 13-19 and 65 and older), $85 (ages 20-64), $115 (relay). Mini-sprint fees are $65 and $95 for the relay. Add $5 after May 31. For more information, visit rbtriathlon.com.
