Ellen Goetz passed away peacefully on December 2 in the Hermosa Beach home that she built during her years as a real estate developer. She was 88. Goetz was born in Detroit, Michigan to parents Cornelius and Nancy Hurley. The family soon moved to West Hollywood. Ellen attended Los Angeles High School and graduated from USC.

After moving to the South Bay in 1952, she worked as a school teacher with the Torrance School district, and then as a Realtor and real estate developer.

She was active in the South Bay community as a member of the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce for 14 years, serving on the Board of Directors as Vice President and President. She was named Hermosa Beach Woman of the Year in 1990. She also was appointed to the Los Angeles County Beach Advisory Commission and served for eight years.

Ellen is survived by her four children Vincent, Nancy (Matt), Michael, Theresa and Ellen’s longtime companion Sonny Vardeman.

There will be an Irish Wake/Celebration of Life after the first of the year. ER
