I think today would have been in the running for the smallest surf… surfed.

In the 11th st parking lot, the Redondo High surf team (who’s practice and contests take place at the Hermosa Pier) was looking a bit lackadaisical, skateboarding through the lot, chatting in the back of coach Duncan Avery’s pickup, or messing around with the slackline they secured underneath the pier between pilings.  There wasn’t enough surf for them, but today a trio decided to make the most of the toe-slappers.

Water lover and marine protector Jose Bacallao, salty blues rock n roller Kira Lingman and I strolled down to the shore and sure enough, the ocean was on a break.  The lake that was the mighty Pacific was making me yearn for the turbulent El Nino swells of months past, and yet the vastness that reach west still had an unmatched power.  We made the strenuous (just kidding) paddle, and with clumps of seaweed sticking to our suits and bodies, we looked like sea creatures on top of miniature boats.  Kira stroked into a few, and gracefully cross stepped on her 9’0 Hap Jacobs, taming the timid ankle to knee high sets with her mermaid walk.  Jose, already vertical on his Aleutian Juice SUP, had a few minis of his own, and after the 5th time one of us said “I think it’s time for breakfast!” we left the sea and its weeds and headed up to Brothers, the ultimate watering hole for the hungry surfer.
