Mira Costa, Redondo athletes in CIF finals

Led by Kayla Ferron, female distance runners from Redondo Union High School highlighted the performances of South Bay athletes at the CIF Division 2 Prelims held at Moorpark High School on Saturday.

Redondo athletes qualified in 11 events for the CIF Track & Field Finals that will start at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

Ferron placed 1st in the 800 with a time of 2:15.47, 8th in the 1,600 (5:00.04) and teamed with Amber Gore, Erin South and Anevey Hiehle on Redondo’s 4×400 relay team that placed 1st with a mark of 3:56.47.

Joining Ferron in the 1,600 competition will be teammates Cara Ulizio (4th, 4:57.09) and Lyndsey Mull (5th, 4:57.71).

Gore also qualified in the 800 (7th, 2:16.16), Rachel Bush advanced in the 3,200 after placing 8th with a mark of 10:54.88 and Hiehle finished 4th in the 400 to reach the finals.

Ashlee Dotson was a double qualifier for Mira Costa after placing 5th in the 400 (58.07) and 8th in the 200 (25.26). Acacia Moore will represent the Mustangs in the 100 hurdles after finishing 7th with a time of 15.26.

In boys competition, Mira Costa’s Kyle Hubbard advances after 6th-place finishes in the 110 hurdles (14.66) and 300 hurdles (39.12) and as a member of the Mustang’s 6th-place 4×100 relay team with Carter Anderson, Corbin Gates and Dylan Gates (3:23.61).

Also representing Mira Costa will be pole vaulters Sean Griffin (5th, 13-09.00) and Christian Ritchie (6th, 13-03.00) along with high jumper Daniel Golubovic (6th, 6-02.00).

Redondo distance runner Evan Malone-White placed 3rd in the 1,600 with a time of 4:22.11 and will join teammate Dustin Herold, who finished 8th in the 800 with a mark of 1:57.38, in the finals.

Top qualifiers from the CIF finals will compete in the Masters Meet on Friday, May 25. The CIF State Championships will be held Friday and Saturday, June 1-2 at Veterans Memorial Stadium on the campus of Buchanan High School in Clovis.

Swimming

Natalie Lavinsky placed 5th in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.58 seconds and 7th in the 100 freestyle (53.21) to lead Mira Costa’s girls to 10th-place in the field of 59 teams at the CIF Southern Section Division 2 Swimming Championships.

The Mustangs finished with 114 points while Redondo recorded 34 points to finish 32nd. Esperanza won the team title with 300 points.

Mira Costa’s relay team had strong performances at the Riverside Aquatics Center, placing 5th in the 400 freestyle relay with Macielle Osterling, Akemi Aiello, Meriel Mitsakos and Lavinsky combining for a time of 3:39.60. The Mustangs also finished 9th in the 200 freestyle relay when Aiello, Giulianna Franco, Kjahna O, Lavinsky finished with a time of 1:42.54 and 16th in the 200 medley relay with Osterling, Hannah Schuler, O and Franco finishing in 1:56.77.

Aiello placed 17th in the 200 individual medley (2:15.49) and 19th in the 100 butterfly (1:00.60).

Elle Inscore finished 9th in the 100 freestyle for Redondo.

In boys competition, Declan Andrew placed 3rd in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.72 to lead Redondo to a 22nd-place finish with 40 points in the 59-team competition. Mira Costa (8) finished 50th. Crescenta Valley won the team title with 301 points.

In the 400 freestyle relay, Mira Costa’s Eric Agliozzo, Ryan Reede, Jason Rupp and Edward Jeon finished 17th with a time of 3:18.36. Redondo’s Adam Rudow, Ashton DeRojas, Nick Johnson and Andrew placed 20th with a 2:30.38 mark.
