Friend scores Super Bowl trip from Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker
by Ralph Doyle
New Year’s Day was an especially big day for Chargers fan Dylan Wyse, even though there were no NFL games that week.
Shortly after Ohio State blew out Oregon, Chargers kicker Cameron “Dicker the Kicker” Dicker surprised Wyse at his family home in Manhattan Beach with two tickets to Super Bowl LVIII. Plus airline tickets and accommodations. The February 9 championship will be held at the Caesar’s Superdome, home of the New Orleans Saints.
Wyse is a Mira Costa High Transition Program graduate and currently a student in the UCLA Pathways program for neurodiverse students. He has also participated in the Friendship Foundation for the past 10 years and currently works as in social media through the Friendship Foundation’s work training program.
Dicker and Wyse became friends when Dicker began volunteering at the Friendship Foundation.
Dicker has been nominated by the Chargers for this year’s Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.
The award recognizes players for their contributions on and off the field.
Dicker is having a great year on the field.
Last Saturday, December 28, in the Chargers’ 40-7 win over the New England Patriots, Dicker was four-for-four on field goals, and four-for-four on extra points, earning him the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week award. He recently signed a four-year, $22 million contract extension with the Chargers.
Dicker is also having a successful year off the field, through his work with Friendship Foundation, according to Friendship Foundation director Kelly Stroman. The Friendship Foundation’s work experience program trains neurodiverse students for the workplace.
Dicker recently donated 30 home game tickets to Friendship Foundation trainees.
The Walter Payton Award winner receives up to $265,000 for donation to their charities of choice. All 32 NFL team nominees receive up to $55,000 for donation to their charities of choice. The NFL Foundation and Nationwide Foundation fund the donations.
The winner of this year’s Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award will be announced live at NFL Honors on Thursday, Feb. 6 at 9 p.m. EST on FOX.
Dicker’s Super Bowl tickets to Wyse didn’t come without a catch.
The Walter Payton Award is based on fan voting.
Before letting go of the tickets Dicker asked Wyse how many times he had voted for him on the Walter Payton Award web site.
“Over 100 times,” Wyse said.
“Good man,” Dicker said.
