Local teams vie for playoff wins

Along with football, playoffs begin this week for boys water polo and girls tennis teams while Redondo’s girls volleyball team must wait and see who the Sea Hawks will face in the State playoffs.

In the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 girls volleyball semifinals, second-seeded Redondo lost only its third match of the season falling to third-seeded Marymount 23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-21.

The Sea Hawks came from behind to win the first set, trailed 10-3 in the second set before rebounding to pull within one at 16-15, then outscored Marymount 10-4 to close the gap at 23-20 before falling in the fourth set.

Marymount will take on top-seeded Mater Dei, a four-set winner over No. 4 Sierra Canyon, on Saturday for the championship.

Boys Water Polo

Bay League champion Mira Costa (18-7) earned the third seed in Division 2 and hosted Agoura on Wednesday. The winner will face the Redlands East Valley-La Serna winner in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Semifinals are slated for Wednesday, Nov. 7.

Ninth-ranked Palos Verdes (18-7) defeated Aliso Niguel 20-12 in a wild-card game on Tuesday and played at Foothill on Wednesday.

In Division 3, Redondo (17-10) beat host South Pasadena 9-5 on Tuesday and will face San Marcos (14-17) in a home game today.

In Division 3, Peninsula (18-7) held off El Segundo (10-12) by a score of 8-6 on Tuesday and will host fourth-seeded Edison (16-13) on Thursday.

In Division 5, Chadwick (10-10) defeated visiting Nordhoff 14-5 on Tuesday and will host top-seeded Cypress (19-9) today.

In Division 6, Pioneer League champion West Torrance (16-8) had a first-round bye and will host Tustin (16-10), a 15-4 winner over top-seeded Warren, today.

In Division 7, South Torrance (8-6) won its wild-card game against Mark Keppel Tuesday and played at Summit (12-4) yesterday. The victor will take on the winner between No. 2 Baldwin Park and Heritage in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Girls Tennis

Bay League champion Palos Verdes (14-3) will travel to face Corona del Mar in the first round of the Open Division on Friday while Peninsula (11-7) will play at Arcadia. Semifinals are slated for Wednesday.

In Division 1, Mira Costa (12-8) played at top-seeded Cate (13-1) yesterday and in Division 2, Pioneer champion South Torrance (11-2) hosted Burbank (8-5) and Chadwick (7-6) was at home against Aliso Niguel (14-5).

In Division 3, North Torrance (10-8) played at Huntington Beach (12-6) yesterday. In Division 4, Bishop Montgomery (14-0) hosted wild-card winner La Mirada (7-6-1) and Torrance (7-8) defeated Pacifica/Oxnard in a wild-card round Tuesday and played at Le Lycee (7-3) on Wednesday.
