
Redondo Union and Mira Costa advanced to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1-AA Girls Volleyball Championships after home victories Tuesday.
It didn’t take long for second-seeded Redondo (29-5) to defeat Millikan in a 25-13, 25-7, 25-17 match. The Sea Hawks will host Marlborough (19-4) Thursday at 7 p.m.
Yaasmeen Bedart-Ghani posted 10 kills and five blocks and Abril Bustamante added eight kills, two aces and four digs to lead Redondo.
Sophomore setter Norene Iosia had another strong performance, spreading the ball around while recording 39 assists, 13 digs and two aces. Kristen Hamlin added seven kills and five digs, Marissa Mitter had seven kills and two blocks and Briana Lanktree posted five kills, three digs and two blocks.
Across town at Fisher Gym, Mira Costa rebounded from an opening-set loss to eliminate Long Beach Poly 17-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-22.
Skylar Caputo had a team-high 19 kills with two aces and Lan Nguyen recorded 14 kills to lead the Mustangs. Phina Leilua came off the bench to post seven kills and provide defense at the net. Katie Rethmeyer recorded six kills and four blocks and Erin Sagisi added five kills.
Seventh-ranked Mira Costa (23-8) will host defending champion and ninth-ranked Marymount (22-9) at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Mustangs look to avenge their 3-1 loss to the Sailors in the first match of the season.

The other two Bay League representatives didn’t fare as well. Palos Verdes (16-14) lost to host Santa Barbara 25-20, 25-22, 23-25, 25-23 and Peninsula (13-13) was eliminated by No. 3 Corona del Mar 25-13, 25-18, 25-12.
In Division 1-A, Bishop Montgomery (12-16) advanced after defeating No. 10 Esperanza 25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 25-14. The Knights play at No. 6 Chino Hills (12-5) in the second round Thursday.
In Division 2-AA, all three local teams emerged victorious. Fifth-ranked North Torrance (21-6) swept visiting San Luis Obispo 25-20, 25-16, 25-20 and will travel to Corona (14-11) on Thursday.
Sixth-ranked South Torrance (23-10) eliminated Righetti 25-10, 25-21, 24-26, 25-9 and will play at No. 10 Norco (19-8).
El Segundo (13-11) swept host Diamond Bar 25-23, 25-18, 25-18 and will host second-seeded Oaks Christian (27-5) in the second round.
In Division 2-A, No. 10 Chadwick (16-7) advanced after beating Western 25-21, 23-25, 25-11, 25-16. The Dolphins host No. 6 Oxnard (21-13) on Thursday.
In Division 4-A, Vistamar (19-7) hosts No. 9 Duarte (19-9) after earning a first-round bye.
