Gore, Suarez lead Redondo cross country teams

Amber Gore and Carlos Suarez were individual winners in the girls and boys races, respectively, at the first Bay League meet Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach.

Gore led Redondo to the team win finishing the 3-mile course in 17 minutes, 21.24 seconds. The Sea Hawks’ 38 points edged Palos Verdes (39) while Mira Costa (49) placed third.

Palos Verdes had three top-ten runners with Cassidy Webber finishing second at 17:50.43, McKennah Genovese placing third (18:04.59) and Anna Pruter finishing fifth (18:12.53).

Nicole Beaudoin’s 12-place finish at 18:49.02 gave Redondo the win. Also running for the Sea Hawks were Anevay Hiehle (7th, 18:16.80), Nicole Pederson (8th, 18:33.05), Taylor Beaudoin (10th, 18:40.96), Thalia Silva (14th, 18:55.21) and Trinity Leonard (21st, 19:29.87).

Mira Costa placed two runners in the top ten with Emma Lautenan (6th, 18:14.76) and Avery Ward (9th, 18:36.49). Other Mustang runners included Alexis Johnson (13th, 18:52.06), Elizabeth Chittenden (17th, 19:09.98), Leora Tofler (23rd, 19:39.32) and Amanda Han (24th, 19:46.30).

Palos Verdes captured the boys team title with 33 points. Redondo finished second with 49 points and Mira Costa third with 59 points.

Suarez (14:559.83) outdistanced Palos Verdes’ Duncan Reid (15:22.56) and Robert Franklin (15:33.88) to win the boys competition, but it was the Sea Kings, who also had top-ten finishes from Jake Cohen (5th, 15:40.08) and Davis Butler (7th, 15:45.14) who came out on top.

Redondo was helped by Ethan Comeaux (6th, 15:41.10), Sergio Rodriguez (10th, 15:50.14), Jonathan Douglas (15th, 16:07.54), Luke Stevens (17th, 16:10.04), Andrew Zavala (18th, 16:16.63) and Nicholas Elias (23rd, 16:33.25).

Mira Costa was led by Xavier Court, who finished 4th at 15:39.18. Also running for the Mustangs were Brandon Shirazi (11th, 15:55.43), Bram Osterhout (15:58.79), Caleb Llorin (13th, 16:06.16), Chance Weston (19th, 16:18.22) and Ethan Williams (21st, 16:27.70).

Last Saturday, Redondo and Palos Verdes represented the South Bay in the 35th annual Nike Pre Nationals in Portland, OR, one of the premier cross country meets on the west coast that included more than 4,000 athletes and over 120 teams coming from eight states and one from Shanghai, China.

Palos Verdes’ girls team finished third overall with 160 points, following champion Great Oak (71) and Desert Vista (115). Redondo finished fifth with 190 points.

Gore had an impressive 4th-place finish in the Danner Championships, completing the 5,000-meter course in 18:08.77. Also running for the Sea Hawks were Hiehle (44th, 19:10.30), Taylor Beaudoin (45th, 19:10.61), Pederson (56th, 19:27.80), Nicole Beaudoin (59th, 19:31.93) and Silva (76th, 19:45.87).

Suarez captured the boys title in Division 1 with a time of 15:49.44. The Sea Hawks were also represented by Comeaux (11th, 16:21.45), Rodriguez (22nd, 16:39.00), Zavala (32nd, 16:46.31) and Douglas (46th, 16:56.18).

Palos Verdes finished fourth overall after competing in the Danner Championships. The Sea Kings were led by Franklin (16:05.73).

Mira Costa spent its Saturday competing in the 41st Stanford Invitational where the Mustang’s girls and boys teams finished 7th and 10th, respectively.

Lautenan led Mira Costa’s girls team placing 25th (18:36) and was followed by Brunstein (45th, 19:10), Avery Ward (51st, 19:18) Tofler (62nd, 19:35), Chittenden (71st, 19:30), Jesse Gregson-Williams (80th, 20:05) and Johnson (96th, 20:29).

Leading the Mira Costa’s boys team were Court (55th, 16:09), Weston (69th, 16:16), Williams (71st, 16:17), Shirazi (73rd, 16:18), Llorin (76th, 16:21), Osterhout (78th, 16:23) and David Hodges (137th, 17:14).
