Local honored for Oscars success
Hermosa Beach resident Dency Nelson was honored with the Director’s Guild of America (DGA) Franklin J. Schaffner Achievement Award for his lifetime contributions as a stage manager to awards shows, events and live broadcasts as well as his success stage managing the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics and 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. He was honored by the Hermosa Beach City Council in January and also in a DGA Awards ceremony in early February. At Tuesday’s council meeting he was honored once again.
“There’s a little thing they do every year here, some of you may have heard of it— called the Oscars,” Mayor Kit Bobko said. “I don’t typically watch, but for whatever reason I happened to have it on and low and behold I saw Dency there… I didn’t know you did anything other than electric cars.” Bobko went on to ask him one thing the public would have missed or not known that goes on at the awards show.
“You know in past years I could have come up with a couple of things, but this year my biggest fear, knowing this was my 25th and final Oscars, I just was so worried that I was inches from a clean get away that something disastrous was going to happen on my watch,” Nelson said. “I’ll tell you this one went flawlessly. Whether you liked what we did or not, it did go on without a hitch.”

Trash protest kicked to the curb
At Tuesday’s protest hearing for the new Athens pay-as-you-throw trash contract, only 285 written protests were received. According to the clerk, the number was not enough to constitute a protest. Negotiations will continue and another hearing will be held on March 26. If awarded, community workshops will begin in late April to discuss the procedures for single, multi-family residences and commercial trash collecting. ER
