A popular, though controversial Hermosa Beach tradition approached the half century mark this Fourth of July with the 49th annual holding of the Hermosa Beach Ironman. Over 600 competitors  and spectators attended the run a mile, paddle a mile, chug a six-pack of (light) beer. (Upchucking during the final stage is a disqualifying offense.) Multitime winner, runner and Hermosa Beach activist Annie Seawright Newton prevailed again in the women’s division. Volleyball player Kevin Collins was a first time winner in the men’s division.
