Hermosa Boy Scout honored

Brennan Danlasky, 14, of Hermosa Beach has just returned from a week at Boy Scout Camp Emerald Bay on Catalina Island, earned through his designation as the Ian White Memorial Campership award winner.

Brennan Danlasky’s hard work and scouting spirit earned the Ian White Memorial Campership award.

The award is sponsored by Lazarex Cancer Foundation of Danville, and administered by Troop 860 in the South Bay, which was Ian White’s home troop. White succumbed to osteosarcoma, bone cancer, two years ago at age 17. Before he passed away, White had earned the rank of Eagle Scout. His life had been extended about one year as a result of FDA-approved clinical trials supported by Lazarex.

“Ian didn’t know the meaning of the word quit. He made the most of life and what it had to offer him,” said Lazarex President Dana Dornsife.

“This campership is a tribute to Ian White’s love of the outdoors and his desire for every Boy Scout to be able to enjoy the camp experience as much as he did,” Troop 860 Scoutmaster Rick Martin said, “Lazarex Cancer Foundation has generously offered to pay the cost, about $600, for one scout from Troop 860 to attend the Summer Camp of his choice.”

Martin said the selection was made in part on the basis of Danlasky’s hard work and outstanding attitude.

Danlasky is a Star Scout who is entering ninth grade at Mira Costa High School. He started as a Tiger Scout in first grade, and spends about five hours a week on scouting activities, attends camp every year, and plans to become an Eagle Scout by the time he finishes high school.

His Boy Scout-related community activities include wrapping Christmas gifts for Cheer for Children Organization, and helping to coordinate Troop Cheer for Children holiday donations. He also plays drums and guitar, and is starting a band. ER
