Around Hermosa Beach

Free greening

Hermosan Scott Ankeny on Tuesday made a presentation to the City Council about his plans to present residents with free, personalized action plans to reduce their carbon footprints by one third, and save as much as $2,000 a year in living expenses.

The action plans are delivered through Ankeny’s website GoingGreenToday.com, and the plans are sponsored by the city’s trash hauler, Consolidated Waste. A spokesman for Consolidated Waste told the council the company is pleased to partner with Ankeny.

Ankeny said people using the personalized plans answer questions about their energy uses, and are given a list of changes to make gradually, one change at a time, over 90 days.

“They don’t have to think, they just do today’s homework,” he said.

His goal is to help one third of Hermosans reduce their carbon footprints by one third. He said he will ask the city and Consolidated Waste to help spread the word.

‘Ask a cop’

The Hermosa Beach Police Department is conducting a trial of the “Ask a Cop” program on Tuesday, July 19. An HBPD officer will be inside the Starbucks coffeehouse at 1100 Pacific Coast Highway, near Ralph’s supermarket 10 to 11 a.m. to answer questions the public might have.

“It is an informal setting. The officer will try and answer whatever questions are presented to him related to law enforcement in the city of Hermosa Beach,” Sgt. Robert Higgins said. “The public is encouraged to stop by with their questions, or even to just say hello.”

Blood drawn

More than 50 people attended a Sunday blood drive at the Clark Building, hosted for the Providence Little Company of Mary hospitals, and gave 40 pints of blood. Anyone interested in hosting a blood drive for local hospitals was urged to call 310-775-1724.

No plastic pints

Hot’s Kitchen in Hermosa Beach will host a fundraiser for the Surfrider Foundation South Bay Chapter 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 17. Beer will not be sold in red plastic cups. Instead pints of “Pints against Plastic” of Kona beer will be served in mugs, which can be purchased for $1.

Pints will be $6, and refills will be $5. Proceeds will benefit the Rise Against Plastic Programs at Redondo Union and Mira Costa high schools.
