Town Hall
The Hermosa Beach Business License Tax Committee will seek public input at a Town Hall meeting 6 p.m. Monday, June 20 at the Hermosa Beach City Council Chambers, 1315 Valley Drive (see related story, same page).
The meeting will provide an opportunity for the public to receive information and discuss proposed changes to the city’s business license tax, which is paid by businesses operating in Hermosa Beach, the organizers said. Depending upon the business sector, proposed changes could result in increased or decreased taxes for local businesses.
Copies of the city’s proposal will be available at the Town Hall meeting, at the City Manager’s Office in City Hall, and on the city’s website www.hermosabch.org.
Town Hall II
A Town Hall meeting 10 a.m. Saturday June 25 at City Hall will be held to get public input on possible aesthetic improvements along the Pacific Coast Highway and Aviation Boulevard commercial corridors.
Outdoor smoking
Councilmen Howard Fishman and Jeff Duclos will hold a public hearing from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 23 at City Hall to investigate the impacts of smoking in outdoor public spaces.
The hearing will provide information and perspective on public health issues associated with outdoor smoking as the City Council considers potential regulation of smoking in various outdoor public places.
The hearing will feature expert public health witnesses, community and business leaders, and an opportunity for the public to be heard.
The Beach Cities Health District and National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, South Bay will provide expert testimony about the impacts of outdoor smoking on public health.
The hearing will focus on business, healthcare and community stakeholders who are affected by outdoor smoking or will be impacted by its potential regulation.
Among those scheduled to provide testimony are:
- Dr. May Eno, addiction specialist at Kaiser Permanente South Bay and a Hermosa Beach resident,
- Dr. Virender Rehan, expert on second and third hand smoke and a researcher for Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center
- Joan Waddell, National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependency
- Joanne Edgerton, board member of the Beach Cities Health District and a Hermosa Beach resident
- Mary Lou Weiss, manager of the Hermosa Beach Farmers’ Market
- Maureen Hunt, interim executive director of the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce
- Mayor Barry Brucker, City of Beverly Hills
- Robert Berger, director of Project TRUST, the LA County Tobacco Control & Prevention Program’s “Communities Putting Prevention to Work” grant
Cities throughout Los Angeles, including Beverly Hills, have adopted measures that limit or ban smoking in outdoor public spaces.
Fishman and Duclos, who serve on an ad-hoc committee studying outdoor smoking, are expected to report their findings to the full City Council later this year.
