Sobriety checkpoint
Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach police announced they will conduct a driver sobriety checkpoint 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3 until 3 a.m. the next day in the eastbound lanes of Artesia Boulevard just west of Prospect Avenue.
Super search
The city school board will seek an interim superintendent to replace Bruce Newlin, whose retirement becomes effective at the end of December, and then will mount an extensive search for a permanent replacement who would start a year from now.
“It’s difficult to find quality candidates in the middle of a school year,” board President Cathy McCurdy said.
In addition, the board “wants to look at the whole administrative structure, which could undergo changes,” she said.
State of schools
Hermosa Beach city school board President Cathy McCurdy will deliver the first State of the School District address 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12 in the City Council chambers, on Valley Drive at Pier Avenue.
Principals of the two schools and a representative of the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation fundraising group will make presentations as well.
The address was suggested by board member Carlene Beste. The Hermosa mayor has delivered an annual State of the City Address since 2002, upon the initial suggestion of then-Councilman Art Yoon.
Tax breaks
Hermosa Beach city officials say homeowners are eligible for a rebate on the street lighting and landscaping portion of their yearly tax bill if they live at the property being assessed, are 62 or older as of July 1 or are permanently disabled (with a physician’s statement required) with a total household income of less than $9,000 for the prior calendar year.
They must submit proof of payment for the total 2010-11 annual assessment no later than Oct. 10.
Applications must be filed annually.
Residents are exempt from paying the utility users tax (UUT) for their personal residences if they are 62 or older (proof required), or are permanently disabled (with a physician’s statement required), and have a total household income less than $9,000 for the previous calendar year.
The UUT exemption application should be filed once only unless there is a change in utility service providers.
