Mike Flaherty, a military veteran who recently retired as the city’s public works superintendent, will serve as emcee of Hermosa’s traditional candlelight ceremony marking Veterans Day, 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11 at the black granite Veterans Memorial on the east lawn of the Community Center, Pier Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway.
Last year saw at least 10 of the memorial’s 15 founders on hand, including Steve Crecy, Flaherty, Judy Garland and former Councilman J.R. Reviczky.
Mayor Pete Tucker, also a founding member of the Hermosa Beach Veterans Memorial Committee, spoke of the 16-year-old origins of the flag-topped memorial, as veterans and others lifted candles to the nighttime sky. In addition, four special candles were lit to honor each branch of the military. ER
