Kelp Klippins: Tabitha Lipkin Profile

Drop Zone LA met up with last month’s contributor, Tabitha Lipkin

One of the first things easily recognized when talking to Tabitha Lipkin is her easy-listening and elegant diction. Turns out besides being a diver, she’s also an anchorlady for San Diego 6, “the CW.” The thought crosses my mind, should I ask her for pointers on journalism?

Lipkin, 24, first began diving at the University of Texas in Austin four years ago by taking diving courses.

“I’ve always been into exploring the next frontier…I’ve been into flying experimental prop planes and worked as a zipline instructor,” Lipkin said. “The logical next thing for me is diving to explore the ocean.”

It was during college that the passing of her mother expedited her desire to dive.

“Everything stopped. I knew I had to move to the ocean,” she said. “It was time to set time to go to diving.”

The exploration gene is dominant in Lipkin’s lineage. Her grandfather is Bob Bitchin, the creator of Cruising Outpost Magazine.

“I plan on following his footsteps,” she said. “He’s an inspiration.”

In the four years since adopting the diving lifestyle, Lipkin has lived her dreams by moving to San Diego and regularly diving all the local spots. She’s traveled all over the Caribbean, with some of her best experiences diving the British Virgin Islands.

“One of my best dives included swimming with sea turtles. In the British Virgin islands, I dove with a shoal of squid,” Lipkin said. “It was fantastic.”

When she’s not reporting on the Charger’s 50 yard line or being the only licensed female jetpack instructor in the world, Lipkin’s desire to explore has been the focus of her perspective.

“I plan on diving all over the world,” she said. “Malaysia and all over the South Pacific are places I want to go. I want to dive World War II shipwrecks and experience diving in the Baltic Sea of all places.”

Diving has taken a hold of her and she feels it’s is something everybody should try.

“There’s so much to see that snorkeling prohibits,” Lipkin said. “Diving let’s you explore new worlds.” DZ
