Lacrosse teams fall in final
Orange County lacrosse programs may still rule the roost, but teams from the South Bay are rapidly moving up the pecking order.
After losing to Foothill 17-7 in the first game of the season, Mira Costa displayed its improvement by narrowing the margin in a hard-fought 14-12 loss to the state’s third-ranked team in the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section championship game held Friday at Valencia High in Placentia.
After tying the score at 12, Mira Costa saw Foothill score twice in the final 1 minute, 28 seconds to win its fourth straight Southern Section championship. Mira Costa reached the LA/Orange County championship game by defeating Bay League rival Palos Verdes for the North Division title.
“Our seniors really stepped up this year,” Mira Costa head coach Dave Vinci said. “Lacrosse started in Orange County several years before us and they have outstanding youth programs. But we’re catching up.”
Mitchell Hymowitz and Dakota Randall scored three goals each and Thomas Farrell and Spencer Young added two apiece for Mira Costa. Goalkeeper Tony Gibbs kept the Mustangs in the game with 15 saves.
Redondo and its potent offense entered the Southern Section championship game riding a 17-game winning streak, but was no match for Los Alamitos, the No. 1 ranked team in the state.
The Sea Hawks were held to a lone goal by Tully Tampakes in the second half in their 24-7 loss. Julia Denny scored four goals and Meesha Robinson added two in the first half which ended with Redondo still in the game trailing 11-6. ER
