Bark alert

Dear ER:

Off-leash dogs are an ongoing problem in Czuleger Park in Redondo Beach. My neighbor was recently bitten by one. When she yelled, “Ow!” the owner just walked away. There are many dog parks in Redondo, but these selfish dog owners want their ocean view. They even post a “look out” at the top of the hill on Catalina Avenue to warn if an officer is coming to give tickets. How many more people are going to get hurt before something is done?

Transit times

Dear ER:

As a Redondo Beach resident, I fully support using Hawthorne Boulevard as a conduit for the new Torrance Light Rail station (“Mitchel Green Line “Community Walk,” ER December 14, 2023) . Running a mass transit artery through residential neighborhoods is absolutely ridiculous and short sighted. As a native of 76, I’ve seen plenty of changes to the city of Torrance, as well as Redondo Beach. Do any of you remember U.S. Steel, Reynolds Aluminum, American Standard, Harvey Aluminum, DOW Chemical, and Pittsburg Paint etc. All heavy industry and now somewhat bedroom communities as those entities have faded away. Don’t place mass transit next to bedrooms, it’s just that simple.

Unintended consequences

Dear ER:

I like Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach the way it is and want to see it stay the way it is (“Hermosa Beach Council sets fees for market-priced residential,” ERNews.com). The good news about Land Value Recapture (LVR) fees is they will ensure that things stay the way they are today because no developer will be interested in developing these properties.

Fireworks Grinch

Dear ER:

Has anyone noticed that during the last two years’ fireworks shows, Manhattan Beach has turned off the beautifully lit green Christmas tree and the Pier lights on the Manhattan Beach Pier? The Pier lights and the lit tree add so much more beauty to the experience, and to the photos and videos we all take. In my opinion, the lights never distracted from the show in the past, so why the change? They used to leave them on during the entire show. We hope to see the Pier lights and the beautifully lit tree return to staying lit during the show next year. Also, the photo taken by Ken Pagliaro on page 12 of last week’s Easy Reader shows all the Pier lights on. Clearly, that is an old photo from the past as the Pier lights have been dark for the last two shows. Even he chose to submit a photo with the Pier lights on. It makes for a much nicer photo, doesn’t it?  Thank you, Manhattan Beach, for another wonderful show.

Photographer Pagliaro responds: The pier lights were on in the beginning and the end. They turned them off sometime in between. I shot my first frame while they were still. I definitely thought it was lame that they turned the lights off. A lot of folks around me were bummed.

Four way problem

Dear ER:

The intersection of Camino De La Costa and Vista Del Mar has a high volume of both vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The visibility is poor exiting from Camino De La Costa to cross Vista Del Mar. Vista Del Mar has a median with parking on either side. Motorists traveling on Vista Del Mar frequently make U-turns in the intersection in order to access free parking near the beach, but without looking in all directions. Entering the intersection from Camino De La Costa on foot or in a vehicle requires inching part way into the intersection to fully view the traffic. I believe the Camino De La Costa / Vista Del Mar intersection needs four-way stop signs.

Torchlight

Dear ER:

It is funny how Redondo Beach’s current majority leadership lit the torches, and brought out the pitchforks in trying to force Councilman Christian Horvath out of office just a few months shy of his term ending [because he allegedly lived out of his district], but they don’t treat Councilmember Zein Obagi the same (‘State Bar proposes two year suspension of Obagi’s law license,” ER December 14, 2023). The fact these people pry into the personal lives of people with whom they disagree and use anything and everything to try to smear them and strip them of their positions, yet ignore something so public and so concerning says a lot.

Live local

Dear ER:

As a former, two-term Manhattan Beach Mayor, City Councilmember and a longtime community volunteer, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to all public safety responders, health care workers and volunteers serving our community. They improve our residents’ quality of life and public safety, especially during the holidays. I encourage everyone to make a difference and volunteer their time and resources to our many outstanding community organizations and our exemplary schools. Also, please patronize our local, independent businesses and restaurants, especially those that support our community organizations and schools.

E-educate

Dear ER:

E-bikes are illegal on The Strand in Hermosa Beach. Educate the kids on that (“Police ask parents to parent kids about e-bikes,” ER December 14, 2023).
