Local athletes earn All-CIF honors

Basketball standouts Jamar Cannon and Eric Mochalski earned first team All-CIF honors, leading a field of local players who were selected by the CIF for their accomplishments during the high school 2009-10 winter season.

Cannon scored 438 points, including 67 3-pointer shots, while leading Redondo to a 17-12 record. The senior guard averaged 18.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game for the Sea Hawks who finish tied for third with Mira Costa in the Bay League race.

Mochalski played a vital role for Mira Costa which reached the quarterfinals of the Division 2A playoffs and finished with an 18-11 record. The senior forward tallied 431 points while averaging 15.1 points and 12.4 rebounds per game.

Also earning All-CIF first team honors was Mira Costa’s Kevin Kaplan, a senior defenseman who led the Mustang soccer team to an 18-3-5 record and an appearance in the second round of the Division 1 playoffs.

Joining Cannon on the Division 2AA first team in boys basketball was Hawthorne’s A.J. Brevard while junior Reese Morgan of Peninsula joined Mochalski on the Division 2A first team. Mira Costa’s Elliot Ozer was named to the second team.

In Division 3AA, Bishop Montgomery’s Tyler Harvey made the second team and, in Division 4AA, Brandon Jawato (El Segundo) and Randy Beatty (Lawndale) were selected to the first team. Vistamar’s Connor McCall made the second team in Division 5AA

In girls basketball, Mira Costa seniors Jasmine Rutledge and Jordyn Priestley were selected to the second team in Division 1AA after leading the Mustangs to a 22-8 record while reaching the quarterfinals in post-season action.

South’s Kelsie Sampson made the first team in Division 2A and, in Division 3AA, North’s Kelly Kika was selected to the first team with teammate Kristen Dresser being named to the second squad.

From the Bay League, Palos Verdes sophomore standouts Kelsey Brockway (1st team) and Victoria Yutronich (2nd team) were honored in Division 3A.

In Division 4AA, Bishop Montgomery underclassmen Kristen Ale (1st team), Devon Brookshire (1st team) and Chelsey Aaron (2nd team) were selected. In Division 5AA, Haley Bush and Airiss Finley made the first and second teams, respectively.

In boys soccer, West’s Cameron Krumpe joined Kaplan on the Division 1 first team. Mira Costa’s Dylan Cleland and West’s Lucas Nascimento made the second team. Mitchell O’Gorman was named to the third team for West.

In Division 4, North stalwarts Paul Mares and Brian Russell were selected to the first team while teammates Claudio Rodriguez (2nd team) and Scott Batunbacal (3rd team) were honored. Bishop Mongtomery’s Kevin Callinan also made the third team.

In girls soccer, Palos Verdes standouts Haley Rosen (1st team), Megan Young (2nd team) and Haley Nakata (3rd team) were named in Division 1.

In Division 3, Chadwick’s Erin Owen (1st team), Jessy Hale (2nd team) and Katherine Wollard (3rd team) earned accolades.

In Division 5, South’s Tina Yeghiayan was named Defensive Player of the Year. Joining her on the first squad were teammates Victoria Cooper and Alyssa Heely. Spartans named to the second team were Elizabeth Esquivel, Jessica Nakae and Christin Yoern. El Segundo’s Natalie Barbosa made the third team.

In girls water polo, Mira Costa’s Laura Milstead and Marisa Purcell were named to the Division 2 second and third teams, respectively. Also from the Bay League, Palos Verdes’ Molly McBee was named the division’s Player of the Year and Chris Murin co-Coach of the Year.

Palos Verdes landed Colleen O’Donnell, Monica Vavic and Ali Solaro on the first team and Fleur Poiesz on the third squad.

In Division 5, El Segundo’s Collette Gulick and Hayden Green were named to the second and third teams, respectively and in Division 6, Chadwick’s Gen Baumann and Carlyn Robertson were selected to the first team while teammates Jenna Solberg (2nd team), Sarah Lindstedt (2nd team) and Kari Ayoob (3rd team) were also honored.
