Donald Trump would serve a second presidential term if the decision were up to Beach City residents who voted at the polls on election day, according to an analysis by Democratic Party consultant Tony Hale, of Redondo Beach.

Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach residents who voted at the polls on November 3 favored Trump by seven percentage points, 7,241 votes to 6,238.

But when Beach Cities mail in ballots were added to the totals, Trump lost locally to Democrat Joe Biden by a three-to-one.

“Traditionally, Republicans have done better with mail in ballots than Democrats. But not this time,” Hale said. He speculated, as have other political observers, that Trump’s campaign against mail-in ballots may have cost him the election.

In Hermosa Beach, mail in ballots favored Biden 5,873 to 1,540. In Manhattan Beach, Biden received 10,962 mail-in ballots to Trump’s 3,541. In Redondo, mail-in ballots favored Trump by more than three to one, 18,842 to 5,471.

Overall, the three Beach Cities favored Biden over Trump 70 percent (41,915 votes) to 30 percent (17,793 votes).

The Democrats enjoy a 42 percent to 26 percent advantage in registration over Republicans in the three Beach Cities. Both parties have lost ground in recent years to voters who register as No Party Preference (30 percent). Hale attributed this trend to young voters who don’t want to be labeled, and to professionals who want to avoid controversy.

Voter turnout in the Nov. 3 Presidential election in all three Beach cities exceeded 80 percent, the highest in recent memory.

Hale worked on several County-wide, Democratic campaigns this year. He also worked on Hermosa resident Trysha Murakawa’s successful campaign for the nonpartisan El Camino College District 3 seat. ER
