Manhattan Beach About Town

Growing Great, which began with a garden at Pacific Elementary, now reaches more than 15,000 kids a year with the intention of helping them make healthy food choices through hands on science and garden education.

Growing Great

The annual Growing Great Farm to Table benefit event takes place April 27 from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. at 72andSunny in Playa Vista and honors Chef David Lefevre (MB Post, Fishing with Dynamite, and Arthur J’s),  who has been instrumental in growing the locally-founded food education non-profit to help serve more low-income communities. The event features demonstrations and tastings with chefs Neal Fraser (Redbird, Vibiana), Della Gosset (Spago) and Austin Cobb (The Strand House). See GrowingGreat.org for ticket information.

Cookies at Council

A special moment took place at City Council Tuesday night when local resident Carol Glover took to the podium to tell the council a little story. She said that on April 24, 30 years ago, she woke up with a backache and went to a place she hadn’t been since she was a child, Sand Dune Park, for a little low impact cardio. At the very same time, a man named Dave Salzman was on his morning run towards the beach.

“That morning, Public Works had the stairs closed for maintenance,” Glover said. “So he had to go up the dune for the very first time. We noticed each other and struck up a conversation at the top. We married 90 days later. We’re celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary on September 1.”

“We wanted to publicly thank the city and Public Works for closing those stairs,” she said. “We tell people to not complain much about Public Works closing things or changing things

because you never know where the detour might take you.”

Glover  made a gift to council of 30 cookies. After the chambers erupted in applause, Mayor Steve Napolitano said the city’s job is to bring people together. “That’s what we do,” he said. “Can we stop the meeting now? Because it’s not going to get better.”
